Rock ready for PSAC West match at Gannon

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team is set to open PSAC West competition when it travels to Gannon 6 p.m. Wednesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team is set to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition when it travels to Gannon University 6 p.m. Wednesday.

SERIES HISTORY vs GANNON
Slippery Rock claims a 14-12-2 lead in the all-time series over Gannon dating back to 1996. The Rock has only suffered one loss to the Golden Knights in their last five meetings.
 
LAST MEETING
SRU fell, 5-3, on the road at Gannon in the quarterfinal round of the PSAC Tournament Nov. 9, 2021. Jordyn Minda led the way for The Rock with one goal and one assist while Sydney Patrick produced a pair of assists. Maddie DeLucio and Julia Mascaro accounted for Slippery Rock's other two goals while Georgia Nagucki and Katy Ericson contributed one assist each.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock battled Fairmont State to a 0-0 non-conference tie in its home opener Aug. 28 at James Egli Field. SRU's offense was led by Kayla Swope with three total shots, all placed on target. Following was Patrick and Ashely Rea with four shots apiece.
 
Goalkeeper Emma Yoder was instrumental to The Rock securing a tie as she made five saves through 90 minutes of action.
 
STELLAR CONFERENCE RESUME
Over 28 full seasons, the Slippery Rock women's soccer team holds a commanding 22-5-1 record in conference opening contests. Of those 28 matches, The Rock has outscored its opponents by an outstanding 73-31 mark and has claimed 12 shutout victories. More impressively SRU held an 18-game winning streak in conference openers from 1996-2013.
 
AIDING THE OFFENSE
Early offensive leaders for Slippery Rock include Rea and Jaime Dermotta who both have one goal apiece this season. Aiding in the scoring efforts is Kylee Kosek who has dished out the teams only assist thus far.
 
SHOOTING STARS
After two games, four players lead The Rock's shooting efforts having placed shots on goal including Swope (3), Dermotta (2), Patrick (2) and Rea (2). As a team, SRU has outshot its opponents 25-14.
 
SOLID START FOR YODER
Yoder, the week one Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week, posted a strong start to the season over the entirety of two matches. Yoder has compiled a 0.50 goals against average to go along with a .875 save percentage and seven saves.
 
For her career, Yoder ranks third in program history in goalie wins (33) and starts by a goalie (47) and is just two saves away from advancing past Lauren McManus (2006-09) to third in saves (183).
 
SEASON OPENING SUCCESS
The Rock's 1-0-1 mark through two games is the 15th season in which the program has been unbeaten their opening two contests. A win against Gannon would give Slippery Rock an identical 2-0-1 record from the 2021 season through its first three games.
 
NEWCOMER DEBUTS
Four Rock newcomers have made their official debut's seeing time in at least one of the first two contests of the season in Morgan Sarver (2 starts), Libby Zacharyasz (2 starts), Skylar Munnikhuysen (2 games) and Sydney Smith (1 game).

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Gannon began the season with a 3-2 loss at Concord before defeating Charleston, 2-0.
 
Through two contests, the Golden Knights as a team average two goals per game. Offensively, Gannon's early leaders include Ella Fadale who has tallied four points on two goals, Logan Nickals with three points on one goal and one assist and Sarah Fails with one goal.
 
Kennedy Solymosi has spent the most time in goal for the Golden Knights through two games and has compiled a 2.32 GAA, .750 save percentage and nine saves over 116 minutes.
 
A season ago, Fails scored two goals against The Rock during Gannon's 5-3 victory in the PSAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Over three meetings between the two teams during 2021, Solymosi made 11 total saves while allowing six goals.
