Track & field teams, six individuals named All-Academic

The Rock men's and women's track and field teams and six individual student-athletes were recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees this week.

– The Slippery Rock University men's and women's track and field teams and six individual student-athletes earned All-Academic honors in a release this week from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
 
Dalton Anderson and Dylan Close represent the men's team as individual honorees, while Marianne Abdalah, Cecily Greggs, Jena Reinheimer and Skylar Sherry represent The Rock women's team.
 
In order for a team to be named All-Academic, all members of the roster must post a collective grade point average above 3.0. In order for individual student-athletes to earn the honor, they must own a cumulative GPA above 3.25 and reach at least the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in at least one event during the indoor or outdoor seasons.
 
The Rock women's team posted a GPA of 3.491, while the men's team posted a GPA of 3.295.
 
Reinheimer and Sherry both earned their second consecutive All-Academic honor, while Abdalah, Greggs, Anderson and Close were all recognized for the first time.
 
Anderson, a graduate student from Grove City, Pennsylvania, earned first team All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the javelin at the NCAA Division II National Championships during the outdoor season. He also claimed the PSAC title in the javelin and was named the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Male Field Athlete of the Year. He posted a season-best throw of 66.85 meters, which ranked No. 7 among all athletes in Division II in 2022. In the classroom, Anderson finished the year with a 3.286 GPA in the master's of business administration program.
 
Close, a graduate student from Eldred, Pennsylvania, also picked up the honor for his performance in the javelin. He finished the year with a season-best throw of 60.77 meters, which ranked No. 28 among all throwers in Division II in 2022. In the classroom, Close finished the year with a 3.50 GPA in the master's of business administration program.  
 
Reinheimer, a senior from Butler, Pennsylvania, was recognized for her excellence in the throws. She finished the spring ranked No. 27 in Division II in the discus with a throw of 46.43 meters. In the classroom, Reinheimer graduated with a degree in finance after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
 
Sherry, a junior from Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, was honored for her performance in the javelin. She finished the spring ranked No. 27 in Division II with a season-best throw of 44.11 meters. In the classroom, Sherry posted a 3.424 GPA as a recreational therapy major.
 
Abdalah, a graduate student from Wexford, Pennsylvania, was recognized after hitting a pair of NCAA provisional marks across the indoor and outdoor seasons. She posted a 5,000-meter time of 17:21 during the indoor season and ran a time of 35:58 in the 10,000-meter run outdoor. In the classroom, Abdalah posted a perfect 4.0 GPA after her first year in the physician's assistant graduate program.
 
Greggs, a senior from Stoneboro, Pennsylvania, picked up the honor after earning All-America honors in the high jump during the indoor season and finishing 15th in the high jump at the outdoor national meet. She cleared a season-best height of 1.73 meters to rank 11th among all athletes in Division II. In the classroom, Greggs finished her senior year with a 3.455 GPA while majoring in communication and minoring in both theatre and esports.
 
Anderson, Sherry, Abdalah and Greggs are all expected to compete in their final year of eligibility at Slippery Rock in 2022-23.
