Rock concludes regular season with six-game week

The Slippery Rock softball team will play six PSAC West games over the next three days with doubleheaders against California (April 28), Edinboro (April 29) and Seton Hill (April 30) to finish the regular season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team will play six games over the next three days with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheaders against California University (Pa.), Edinboro University and Seton Hill University to finish the regular season.

SENIOR DAY (Friday)
Prior to Fridays doubleheader against Edinboro, SRU will honor its lone 2022 senior Ashley Calkins for her contributions to the program throughout her career.
 
POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
While not mathematically eliminated from PSAC Tournament contention, Slippery Rock likely has to win at least five of its remaining six games while receiving help from around the league to earn a postseason berth and continue its season in the conference tournament which will be held May 4-7 in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.
 
The top five teams in both the PSAC West and PSAC East standings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the tournament. SRU enters Thursday's contests three games behind Mercyhurst for fifth place in the PSAC West standings.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock dropped a PSAC West doubleheader at Mercyhurst in 3-2 and 7-2 losses April 23, at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
 
ANDERSON MAKES HISTORY
With her 19 total strikeouts over the weekend against Indiana (Pa.) and Mercyhurst, Kelsi Anderson broke The Rock's single-season strikeout record with a new total of 121 passing Camie Shumaker, who struck out 108 batters in 2019.  
 
Anderson has now recorded three double-digit strikeout games this season and has struck out less than seven batters in just six contests in 2022.
 
THE ROCK LINEUP
Erin Gardner continues to lead The Rock in batting average at .340 having dipped below .300 in only eight games out of 32 so far this season. SRU's trusted leadoff hitter has scored a team-high 21 runs in addition to having the second most doubles with six.
 
Gardner has .553 percent success in advancing Rock runners when she is at bat and leads the team in multi-hit games having 12 this year.
 
Cami Fisk and Mackenzie Freeman enter the week hitting an identical .278 while leading The Rock in different categories. Fisk, who has had a hit in eight of the last 10 contests, leads SRU in doubles with seven in addition to tying Alexsa Hurd for second in RBI at 15. Fisk has also hit three home runs.
 
 Freeman continues to have team-highs in RBI with 27 and home runs with six. Freeman has drove in at least two RBI in eight games this year.
 
Arielle Brown, the No. 2 hitter in the SRU batting order, has a .277 batting average and has scored the second most runs for The Rock with 19 in addition to leading in stolen bases with four.
 
• Hurd (.327) and Naomi Childs (.308) in 23 and 21 games respectively are the remaining Rock players to bat over .300. Hurd leads SRU in triples with two.
 
• Fisk, Hurd, and Julia Montie all tie for second in home runs with three apiece.
 
Emma Kennedy is the fourth Rock batter with a double-digit RBI total, having driven in 13 in addition to hitting a pair of home runs as a freshman.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
• Anderson (8-6) continues to show her dominance in the circle through 17 starts as she is third in the PSAC in strikeouts with 121. Anderson holds a 2.71 ERA and has pitched a rotation-high 98 innings with three shutouts and eight complete-game victories. Opponents have hit just .251 off of her this year.
 
• Second in the rotation is Chloe Sharman who is 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA. Sharman has struck out 42 batters and has limited opponents to a .235 batting average over 55.1 innings of work.
 
• Hurd (0-7, 1 save) rounds out the staff with a 4.77 ERA and 38 strikeouts this season over 58.2 innings pitched.
 
RECORDS WATCH
Entering final week of the regular season, four Rock softball members continue to make their way up the SRU career record books.
 
For her career, Anderson is fifth in strikeouts (220) in addition to being eighth in shutouts (5), 15th in innings pitched (207.2) and 17th in wins (14).
 
In 31 appearances in 2022, Freeman remains one home run away from moving into a tie for 15th place on The Rock's single-season home run ledger. Freeman is 19th in SRU's single-season RBI ranking with 27 total.
 
For her career, Sharman is eighth in strikeouts (191), 12th in innings pitched (267.2) and 17th in wins (14).
 
With three doubleheaders remaining in the regular season, Head coach Rice is just two wins away from passing Jan Kasnevich (1977-86) and becoming the second winningest coach in program history.
