MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team recorded 11 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference automatic qualifying marks and two NCAA provisional marks at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational that concluded Saturday evening after three days of competition at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Â
The meet organizers from Myrtle Beach Sports briefly paused the meet Saturday to recognize Slippery Rock head coach
John Papa and thank him for bringing his Rock teams to Myrtle Beach for the last two decades. Papa, who has announced he will retire this June after devoting more than 40 years of his life to SRU, was on his final spring break trip with The Rock.
Â
Slippery Rock's NCAA marks came from a pair of throwers with the headliner coming from
John Eakin in the shot put. Eakin shattered his career-best to win the competition with a throw of 17.43 meters, just short of the SRU program record of 17.50 meters that was set by Cory Darr in 2002. Eakin's effort currently ranks No. 4 among all throwers in Division II, as of Saturday evening.
Â
Dalton Anderson took second in the javelin throw with an NCAA mark of 59.81 meters to lead two SRU throwers to top five showings.
Dylan Close took fourth with a throw of 56.63 meters, just short of the NCAA standard of 58.38 meters. Anderson's mark currently sits No. 9 among all throwers in Division II, as of Saturday evening.
Â
Joshua VanDeMark took eighth in the hammer throw with a mark of 50.21 meters to give SRU four total PSAC marks in the throws.
Â
SRU also registered three PSAC marks in the jumps with
Dan Hyatt placing fourth in the pole vault (4.41 meters),
Taye Lynch finishing ninth in the triple jump (13.88 meters) and
Bryan Dworek finishing 12th in the long jump (6.62m).
Â
Dworek also teamed with
Isaiah Seybert,
Parker Reed and
AJ Virata to place fourth in the 4x100-meter relay in 42.93 seconds and then teamed with
Jason Goodman,
Cade Adams and Virata to place eighth in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:29.70.
Â
Virata also recorded a PSAC individual mark with a 14th place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.28 seconds.
Â
Brenden Lewis led the hurdlers with a 12th place showing in the 110-meter hurdles in a PSAC mark of 15.44 seconds. Adams was 12th in the 400-meter hurdles, just off the PSAC standard in 58.68 seconds.
Â
The final PSAC qualifying efforts for SRU came from the distance runners, with
Shannon Dooley placing seventh in the mile in 4:23.58 and
Tucker Davis finishing 15th in the 10,000-meter run in 33:46.40.
Â
The Shamrock Invitational featured more than 1,000 athletes from all over the east coast from schools in all NCAA divisions, as well as NAIA and junior colleges.
Â
Slippery Rock will now shift its focus to three straight local meets, first visiting Carnegie Mellon March 25-26 before hosting the Dave Labor Invitational April 2 and traveling to the Westminster Invite April 9.
