YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team recorded 15 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, two NCAA provisional marks and four top five finishes at the YSU Icebreaker Friday at Youngstown State University.

Competition in the 2022-23 season opener began at 1 p.m. and didn't wrap up until after 10 p.m. as a total of 55 college teams representing all divisions were in action at the meet.

The Rock only sent 18 men to the competition and came away with 15 PSAC marks and two NCAA provisional marks. Those NCAA marks both came in the throws with
Joshua VanDeMark and
Joshua Gose earning runner-up honors in the two disciplines. VanDeMark was second in the weight throw with a heave of 18.19 meters, while Gose was second in the shot put with a toss of 16.80 meters.

Gose was also eighth in the weight throw with a PSAC mark of 15.09 meters, finishing just behind
Joshua Rohland in seventh with a toss of 15.23 meters. Rohland also hit the PSAC standard in the shot put with a 12th place showing at 14.29 meters.
John Eakin rounded out SRU's six PSAC marks in the two throwing events with a fourth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 16.23 meters.

AJ Virata and
Bryan Dworek both recorded a pair of PSAC marks Friday with Virata hitting the standard in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes and Dworek hitting the mark in the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Virata was 13th in the 60m in 7.00 seconds and was ninth in the 200m in 22.32 seconds. Dworek was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 7.02 meters and took 10th in the 200m in 22.39 seconds.

SRU got two PSAC marks and top 10 finishes in the triple jump, led by
Taye Lynch in fifth place with a leap of 13.96 meters.
Zack Duda followed in ninth at 13.21 meters.

The Rock also picked up a pair of PSAC qualifying performances in the 60-meter hurdles with freshman
Matthew Crow leading the way in 10th place at 8.42 seconds.
Brenden Lewis followed in 15th at 8.63 seconds.

Freshman
Kadin Johnson had a strong collegiate debut to place ninth in the 400-meter dash in 50.13 seconds. He then joined with Virata, Dworek and
Alex Dickson to take seventh in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:24.78.

The final PSAC mark of the opener came from
Dan Hyatt, who took seventh in the seeded section of the pole vault with a clearance of 4.50 meters.

Slippery Rock sent a limited roster to YSU this week with most of its distance runners still recovering from cross country season. The Rock's multi-event athletes will open their season Saturday and Sunday at the Mike Kowal Multi Meet with SRU hosting the first four events Saturday and Edinboro hosting the conclusion Sunday.

This weekend marks the only competition for SRU in 2022 as the team will break after this weekend for finals and the holidays before returning to competition in January.
