LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Slippery Rock University volleyball freshman middle hitter
Lauren VonderHaar was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
VonderHaar earned the first weekly honor of her career after recording 12 blocks over a pair of Slippery Rock wins last week against Salem and California (Pa.). Additionally, VonderHaar also contributed seven total kills on a .313 attack percentage.
Â
After coming off the bench to produce two blocks and two kills in SRU's three-set victory over Salem, VonderHaar earned her first career start against California and posted one of the top performances by a middle hitter this season with 10 blocks (two solo / eight assisted) and five kills as SRU defeated the Vulcans for the first time since 2006.
Â
Dating back to the 2002 season there have been just three other SRU athletes that have had more blocks in a single-match: Michelle Hren (12 vs. West Liberty, 2013), Lisa Bakaitis (11 vs. Millersville, 2011) and
Abigail Nigon (11 vs. Notre Dame, 2022).
Â
VonderHaar appeared in 13 matches this season. The Aurora, Ohio native ended her rookie year with 16 kills, a .207 attack percentage and 18 blocks (five solo / 13 assisted).
Â
Slippery Rock finished its season on a three-match streak for a final overall record of 14-16, the program's second highest season win total since 2012, as well as a PSAC West mark of 8-8.
