CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's cross country team took second by just one point at the Marty Uher Invitational hosted by California University (Pa.) Saturday at Roadman Park.

The Rock put five runners in the top 12 to score 33 points, narrowly falling to Indiana (Pa.) by just one point as the Crimson Hawks finished with 32 points. Cal U finished third with 65 points and Alderson Broaddus did not enter enough runners to post a team score.

Four teams and 35 total runners took part in the 4,730-meter race that served as the season opener.

Devon Navaroli led Slippery Rock with a third place finish after covering the course in 15:24.5, just three seconds off the race winner.

Shannon Dooley,
Ethan Brentham and
Troy Hart came in together as a pack in fifth, sixth and seventh places with Dooley leading the group home in 15:40.2. Brentham posted a time of 15:42.6 and Hart crossed the line in 15:44.2.

The Rock's final scorer was
Ozzy Moore, who took 12th in 16:00.5.

Benjamin Buckless was 17th in 16:22 and
Noah Johnson was 18th in 16:23 to round out the top seven finishers for SRU.

Thursday marked the first of four regular season races Slippery Rock will run in this fall before reaching the conference championships. The Rock will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Doug Watts Invitational hosted by Edinboro University.
