SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team sits third in the overall standings after the first day of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships wrapped up Thursday from Shippensburg University.

The Rock picked up 10 points in the hammer throw thanks to a third place finish from Alec Morris and a fifth place finish from Joshua VanDeMark.

Just two event finals were contested Thursday with the hammer and the 10,000-meter run. The only other events that took place Thursday were the opening five events of the decathlon.

Morris earned All-PSAC honors with a third place finish after recording a mark of 53.25 meters to score six points for the team. All six of Morris' throws topped the 51.00-meter mark and he had two throws over 53.00 meters on the day.

VanDeMark was the surprise of the opening round after unleashing a personal best 52.71 meters to win the first flight and advance to the finals. His mark held up for a fifth place finish and scored four points in the team standings.

Jason Goodman led the multi-event athletes over the first five events of the decathlon and sits second in the standings with 3,509 points, just nine points off the leader. Kyle Adams had a solid day to sit ninth in the standings with 2,952 points. Ryan McQuown, who was the second overall seed, battled through an injury but finished all five events and sits 11th with 2,650 points.

The final five events of the decathlon will take place Friday on the second day of the three-day championship meet.

Shippensburg leads the team race with 34 points after two scored events. East Stroudsburg sits second with 14 points, followed by SRU with 10 points in third and Bloomsburg with 6.5 points in fourth.

Competition resumes Friday morning at 10 a.m.
