PSAC Tournament Preview: Rock vs. Gannon

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will travel back to Erie, Pennsylvania to begin the 2021 PSAC Tournament against Gannon 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a quarterfinal contest.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will travel back to Erie, Pennsylvania to begin the 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament against Gannon University 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a quarterfinal contest.

PSAC TOURNAMENT SETUP
The top four teams from the Western and Eastern Divisions qualified for the PSAC Tournament. Tuesday's quarterfinal matches will feature intra division matches between the No. 1-4 and No. 2-3 seeds.
 
The winners of Tuesday's games advance to the semifinals Friday. The winner of the Mercyhurst-Edinboro match will play the victors of the Bloomsburg-West Chester game in one semifinal contest while the winner of the Slippery Rock-Gannon match will play either Kutztown or Millersville in the second semifinal.
 
The PSAC Tournament semifinals and championship rounds will be held at the highest Eastern Division seed remaining following Tuesday's games.

ROCK PSAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Slippery Rock has won four PSAC Championship titles (2003, 2005, 2012 and 2019). SRU has now qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the last 11 consecutive seasons and has qualified 18 total times since its first season in 1993.
 
The Rock and Golden Knights have only met in the PSAC Tournament one previous time in 2013 hosted by SRU, which resulted in a narrow 1-0 victory for Gannon.
 
LAST MEETING
The Rock battled Gannon to an eventual 0-0 PSAC West tie on the road Nov. 6 to finish the regular season. The tie locked in SRU as the No. 3 seed and Gannon the No. 2 seed heading into the PSAC Tournament.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Rock holds a 14-11-2 lead over the Golden Knights dating back to 1996. Three of the last four meetings between the teams resulted in shutout victories for SRU. Slippery Rock is 5-6-2 when playing on the turf of McConnell Family Field.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT: Slippery Rock ended the regular season in a 0-0 draw at Gannon with Emma Yoder making nine saves through 110 minutes to secure the tie.
 
QUARTERFINAL HISTORY: In seasons where divisions were split into East and West, Slippery Rock has claimed the No. 3 seed or higher seven times while in years where the conference was not split, SRU has ranked No. 3 or better six times. Overall, The Rock has advanced from the quarterfinal match to the semifinals 11 times.
 
POSTSEASON VETERANS: 10 current Rock players appeared in 2019's PSAC Tournament quarterfinal match vs. IUP including Emily Arnold, Rachel Edge, Katy Ericson, Julia Mascaro, Jordyn Minda, Georgia Nagucki, Ashley Rea, Brooke Riefenstahl Kayla Swope, and Emma Yoder. Swope was able to contribute to The Rock's win by scoring the game-winning goal.
 
Overall, 17 players on this year's roster were part of the program when SRU won a PSAC tournament championship in 2019.

In her PSAC Tournament career, Yoder is 3-0 with 13 saves. Swope has two goals in PSAC Tournament games overall. Minda also has one goal in the postseason with Nagucki and Edge each tallying one assist in past PSAC Tournament matches.
 
REGIONAL RANKINGS: Slippery Rock remained ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA Division ll Women's Soccer Committee in the second set of NCAA regional rankings released last week.
 
The regional rankings are the only official ranking used by the NCAA to determine which teams from each of the eight regions will qualify for the 56-team NCAA Division ll playoffs.
 
The top seven teams in the Atlantic Region in the final set of rankings will earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The tournament champions from the PSAC and the Mountain East Conference will both earn automatic bids with the five at-large bids from the region being determined by the rankings.
 
ROAD READY: The Rock has posted strong efforts through its nine road matches this season outscoring it opponents 19-7. Of its five road wins, four have been shutouts and three were at least two-goals victories.
 
LEADING THE CHARGE: The Rock's offense is led by Edge who has a team and PSAC-best 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists. Swope is second for SRU this season on offense with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. The scoring leaders are rounded out by Minda with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.
 
SHES A KEEPER: Following a stellar showing in the season finale against Gannon, Yoder has now collected 58 saves with a .806 save percentage and 0.75 goals against average in 18 straight starts.
 
Yoder enters the week ranked third in the division in GAA and fourth in saves and save percentage.
 
In the SRU career record book, Yoder sits fourth in shutouts (18) while landing sixth in saves (170) and holding third place in wins (32).
 
NATIONALLY RANKED: As a team SRU ranks 18th in assists (35) and 20th in both points (129) and goals (47). Edge ranks 14th in goals and 18th in points individually.
 
TOTAL OFFENSE: Rounding out SRU's goal scorers through the regular season are Nagucki (5), Patrick (5), Rea (3), Megan Sikora (2), Ericson (1), Faith Diffenbacher (1), Mascaro (1) and Olivia Yoder (1).
 
Those who have had a hand in setting up a goal with at least one assist consist of: Edge (7), Swope (5), Minda (4), Patrick (4), Mascaro (3), Nagucki (3), Sikora (3), Ericson (2), Nina King (2), Arnold (1), Maddie DeLucio (1) and Reagan Reeves (1) with one each.
 
AGAINST GANNON: In previous meetings with Gannon a multitude of players have found success. Sikora tallied a pair of goals while Swope has netted a goal and dished out a pair of assists. Minda and Edge have both scored a goal and produced an assist on the Golden Knights. Rounding out the scoring efforts is Patrick with one goal and Ericson with an assist. Yoder has earned three wins and a tie over Gannon, making 25 saves and allowing no goals.
 
ROCK RECORD BOOK: Edge lands fourth in The Rock's record book for career points (80) and fifth in assists (22) while claiming sixth in goals (29).
 
Minda is 17th in the SRU career starts (59), sixth in game-winning goals (10), 11th in career goals (22), and 17th in career points (55).
 
Rounding out the career records in Swope who ranks 18th in career assists (14).

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
The Golden Knights are led offensively by Taylor Lewis with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. Lewis enters the week ranked third in the PSAC in points and goals.
 
Kayla Bevacqua and Sarah Fails round out the leading scorers for Gannon both with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
 
Goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi has made 49 saves along with a .831 save percentage and 0.70 GAA. Solymosi made four saves in the regular-season finale vs. SRU.
