Rock to host California for PSAC West matchup

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will host California (Pa.) for a PSAC Western Division contest at James Egli Field 1 p.m. Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host California University of Pennsylvania for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest at James Egli Field 1 p.m. Saturday.

LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock defeated Cal U. at home, 3-0. The Rock outshot the Vulcans 22-2 in the contest without allowing a shot on goal.
 
The Rock got the scoring started in the 15th minute when Sofia Harrison scored her first goal of the 2018 season on a pass from Skye Kramer to give SRU a 1-0 lead. Slippery Rock added a goal just over 10 minutes later when Kaitlyn Barackman netted an unassisted goal at the 34:36 mark to stretch The Rock lead to 2-0.
 
SRU secured the 3-0 win with a Shannon McIntyre goal at the 41:03 mark on a penalty kick for her first goal of the season.
 
Rock goalkeeper Kylie Downs earned the shutout without recording a save while California goalkeeper Carly Gobbie recorded six saves before being relieved by Reilly McGlumphy who finished with four saves in the losing effort.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Slippery Rock leads the all-time series 26-10-2, winning four consecutive matches against the Vulcans and nine of the last 10 games over Cal U. The last win for Slippery Rock came last season in a 3-0 victory at home for SRU.
 
In home games against California, Slippery Rock averages 2.4 goals per game while allowing 1.4 goals. The .711 win percentage for The Rock against the Vulcans is the best against a PSAC West opponent with at least 35 games played for SRU.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock defeated Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 3-1 at home. The Crimson Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Mahogany Willis in the 5th minute.
 
SRU responded on a Georgia Nagucki goal at the 35:05 mark to tie the contest at one apiece, the score marked the first of Nagucki's collegiate career.
 
The Rock opened the second half with a Kayla Swope goal in the 67th minute to give Slippery Rock a 2-1 lead. SRU secured a 3-1 victory when Harrison netted her fourth goal of 2019 at the 79:46 mark.
 
Slippery Rock goalkeeper Emma Yoder recorded her seventh-consecutive game allowing one goal or less while also finishing with seven saves.
 
• STREAKING – The 3-1 victory over IUP marks the sixth-consecutive victory for Slippery Rock, the longest winning-streak for The Rock since winning seven-straight games in 2016 over Mercyhurst, Mansfield, Gannon, Bloomsburg, Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion.
 
• DEFEND YOUR DIRT – SRU allowed 10 shots in the win over IUP, marking the sixth contest this season that The Rock defense has allowed 10 shots or less. In games when Slippery Rock allows less than 10 shots, it has a 5-1-0 record.
 
• SIZZLING SWOPE – Swope has been on force on offense for SRU in 2019. The freshman ranks second for Slippery Rock in points (8), shots (21), shots on goal (11), game-winning goals (1) and is tied for fourth in goals (2).
 
• KEEPER COUNT – The two-time reigning PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week has seven-consecutive games allowing one goal or less, the first Rock goalkeeper to do so since Dana O'Neill in 2013. Yoder ranks in the top-10 in several categories in the PSAC including fifth in goals against average (.704), tied for fourth in shutouts (2), saves (25) and goals allowed (5).
 
• OFFENSIVE ATTACK – Slippery Rock's 18 goals scored through seven games marks the most it has scored through seven contests to open a season since 2015 when it scored 22 goals. Rachel Edge leads the way on offense for SRU, leading The Rock in goals (5), assists (5), points (15), shots (25), shots on goal (15) and is tied for second in game-winning goals (1).
 
• LEADING THE WAY – SRU has now won five-consecutive conference games to open the season for the first time since 2013 when Slippery Rock defeated Mercyhurst, Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Kutztown and Mansfield in PSAC contests.
 
• ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK – The Rock continue to get contributions from top to bottom on its roster this season. Jordyn Minda ranks third on the team in goals with three while Tyler Spence and Swope rank tied for fourth with two goals apiece. McIntyre ranks third in assists with three along with one goal. Barackman is tied for fourth in assists (2) for Slippery Rock while ranking sixth in shots (6).
 
• PSAC LEADERS – Slippery Rock has several players ranking near the top of the conference in many categories. Swope being tied for second in assists (4). Harrison tied for second in game-winning goals (2) and is tied for third in goals (4)  while McIntyre sits in a tie for third in assists (3). Edge leads the PSAC in assists in addition to ranking third in points,  goals and is tied for fourth in shots (25).
 
As a team, SRU ranks fourth in goals per game (2.6) while ranking fifth in goals per contest allowing .71. The Rock leads the conference in assists (19) and points (55) while ranking tied for third in goals (18).
 
• AGAINST THE VULCANS – SRU has four players on its current roster who have previously scored against Cal U. Barackman, Harrison and McIntyre each scored in last season's matchup with the Vulcans while Madison Johnson scored in the 2017 matchup against California.
 
THIS WEEK IN ROCK HISTORY
• Sept. 30, 1996 – Allison Bourke scores four goals in a 11-0 Rock victory over La Roche University. The four goals in a single-game for Bourke is tied for second-most in program history behind Cara Yannotti who scored five goals against Dominican in 2001.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS
• Last time out: Cal U. is coming off 2-1 loss on the road against Gannon. Elisabeth Engle scored a goal for the Vulcans just 1:26 into the game to five California an early 1-0 lead. 

Gannon took control following the score with Emily Cekella and Megan McCarthy netting goals in the 18th and 86th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over Cal U. 

Vulcan goalkeeper Gianna Sinatra finished with five saves in the losing effort. 
 
• Lindsie Galbreath leads the way for the California offense with a team-high five shots on goal resulting in one goal. Carilyn Pasierb has guided the Vulcans on offense with a team-best two assists.
 
• Gianna Sinatra and Carly Gobbie have split time in goal for California. Sinatra has eight saves with a .571 save percentage along with a 2.39 goals against average in two starts. Gobbie recorded 12 saves in three starts with a .800 save percentage and a 1.12 goals against average.
