Rock to host IUP for PSAC West match

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will host Indiana (Pa.) at James Egli Field for a PSAC Western Divison matchup 4 p.m. Wednesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania at James Egli Field for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division matchup 4 p.m. Wednesday.

LAST MEETING
IUP defeated No. 19 Slippery Rock at home, 2-1. 

Indiana opened the scoring with a goal in the 4th minute when Mahogany Willis scored her third goal of the season with McKenna Keffel providing the assist.
 
Slippery Rock responded in the 44th minute when Rachel Edge scored on a cross from Brooke Testa to tie the score at 1-1.
 
The Crimson Hawks converted on the game-winner at the 81:23 mark when Willis netted her second goal of the game on a cross from Carley Donia, securing the 2-1 victory over SRU.
 
Rock goalkeeper Kylie Downs finished with two saves on four shots faced while IUP keeper Madeline Smakulski added 11 saves. Slippery Rock won the shot battle 17-10 and had the advantage in shots on goal at 12-4.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Slippery Rock leads the all-time series 18-16-2 with its last victory coming in 2017 when SRU defeated IUP 1-0 at home. The Rock has a 6-4-0 record over its last 10 matchups with the Crimson Hawks.
 
SRU has an 8-2-0 record over the last 10 home matchups with IUP. In those games, SRU is averaging 1.8 goals per game while allowing 0.5 goals including two consecutive shutouts. The Rock owns a 10-6-1 record all-time against the Crimson Hawks at home.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
•  LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock defeated Mercyhurst University 2-1 in overtime on the road. The Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 on a goal by Alyssa Otto in the 52nd minute, SRU responded on a Tyler Spence goal at the 86:38 mark to send the contest to overtime.
 
SRU secured the 2-1 victory when Edge scored the game-winner in the 100th minute on a cross from Julia Mascaro giving Slippery Rock its fifth straight victory. 
 
Rock goalkeeper Emma Yoder finished with a save in 99:35 minutes played while MU keeper Vilde Wold had six saves in the losing effort.
 
•  FIVE STRAIGHT – The 2-1 victory over Mercyhurst marks the fifth consecutive win for Slippery Rock. Over its five-game winning-streak, The Rock has outscored opponents 15-2.
 
The five consecutive victories mark the longest winning streak for SRU since winning five straight last season against No. 14 Millersville, California (Pa.), Mercyhurst, West Chester and Shippensburg. 

Slippery Rock last won six consecutive games in 2014 when The Rock defeated Mercyhurst, Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Kutztown, Mansfield, East Stroudsburg and West Chester.
 
•  STREAKING – Edge was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week after scoring a goal for the fifth consecutive game against Mercyhurst. The sophomore is the first player since 2003 to score in five consecutive games for The Rock. Edge leads SRU in goals (5), assists (5), and points (15).

•  BACK-TO-BACK – After leading SRU to a 2-0-0 record last week, Yoder claimed PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, marking the first time since 2007 that a Rock women's soccer player has claimed the award in back-to-back weeks.
 
•  OFFENSIVE ATTACK – Slippery Rock recorded two goals in its victory over Mercyhurst, marking the fifth consecutive game SRU has scored at least two goals in a game. Dating back to 2018, The Rock has scored two or more goals in six of the last 10 games. SRU is 9-0-1 in contests where it scores two or more goals since last season. 
 
•  ROCK SOLID DEFENSE - SRU hasn't allowed more than one goal in six games this season, marking the first time Slippery Rock has allowed one or fewer goals in each of its first six games since the 2013 season.
 
•  PSAC LEADERS – Edge sits near the top of the PSAC in several offensive categories. The sophomore ranks first in assists, tied for second in goals and tied for third in points. Sofia Harrison and Jordyn Minda are tied for second in game-winning goals (2) while Shannon McIntyre and Kayla Swope are tied for third in assists (3).
 
•  KEEPER COUNT – Yoder sits near the top in goalkeeper statistics in the PSAC this season. The sophomore ranks tied for third in shutouts (3) and eighth in save percentage (.818). The Rock keeper also has a 0.66 goals against average and 18 saves.
 
•  SETTING THE PACE – Slippery Rock has a 4-0-0 record to open PSAC Western Division play this season, marking the first time The Rock has opened PSAC West play 4-0-0 since the 2007 season.

• ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK - Kaitlyn Barackman ranks second on the team in assists (2) followed by Megan Sikora (1) and Mascaro (1). Spence ranks fourth in shots on goal (6) followed by McIntyre (3) and Barackman (3). 

• AGAINST IUP - Edge has preivously scored against IUP with a goal in last season's matchup with the Crimson Hawks. The sophomore netted her first goal of the season on a cross from Brooke Testa in a 2-1 loss for SRU. 
 
THIS WEEK IN ROCK HISTORY
•  Sept. 30, 1996 – Allison Bourke scores four goals in a 11-0 home victory for The Rock over La Roche College. The four goals scored in a single-game ranks tied for second in program history.
 
•  Oct. 1, 2011 – Former Rock women's soccer head coach Noreen Herlihy earns her 200th career coaching victory at Slippery Rock. Herlihy coached at SRU from 1995-14 and her 250 wins and .674 winning percentage stands as the best in program history.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
•  Last time out: Indiana is coming off a 1-0 overtime victory over Gannon at home. Willis netted the game-winner for IUP in the 95th minute on a cross from Mya Hilliard.
 
Crimson Hawk goalkeeper Madeline Smakulski recorded a career-high 13 saves to secure the 1-0 victory for Indiana.
 
•  Willis leads the way for the Crimson Hawks on offense with a team-leading eight goals and 17 points. Samantha Joyce and Makenzie Witzel rank second on the team with one goal apiece along. Joyce ranks second in points (4) followed by Witzel (2) and Hilliard (2). 
 
•  In four starts in goal for Indiana, Smakulski has a 0.79 goals against average and a .921 save percentage on 52 shots faced this season.
