PSAC Championship Preview: Rock vs. Edinboro

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will host Edinboro in the 2019 PSAC Tournament Championship game 1 p.m. Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host Edinboro University in the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game 1 p.m. Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
Slippery Rock entered the PSAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the PSAC Western Division and defeated Indiana University (Pa.), 2-1, on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament followed by a 1-0 overtime win over East Stroudsburg in the semifinal round on Saturday.
 
Edinboro entered the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed out of the PSAC West. EU defeated third-seeded Mercyhurst University in the quarterfinal round followed by a 1-0 win over fourth-seeded West Chester University in the second semifinal contest on Friday.
 
The winner of Sunday's contest will claim the 2019 PSAC title and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Slippery Rock's last conference championship came in the 2012 season while Edinboro has never won a PSAC title.
 
ROCK PSAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Slippery Rock has won three PSAC Championships (2003, 2005 and 2012). SRU has now qualified for the PSAC Tournament 17 times and has not missed out on appearing in the conference tournament since the 2009 season.
 
LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock defeated Edinboro at James Egli Field, 3-2, to secure the No. 1 overall seed in the PSAC Western Division Nov. 2.
 
Edinboro opened the scoring with two early goals, the first coming from Danielle Chatten in the 4th minute to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 advantage. EU struck again in the 20th minute when Rebecca Manns netted a pass from Clare Crossley to give Edinboro the 2-0 lead.
 
The Slippery Rock offense responded with three unanswered goals in the second half, the first coming from a made Georgia Nagucki penalty kick in the 71st minute to cut the EU lead to 2-1.
 
Jordyn Minda joined The Rock scoring effort in the 72nd minute, netting a pass from Tyler Spence to tie the contest at 2-2. SRU secured a 3-2 comeback victory and the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West when Spence scored the game-winner in the 90th minute with Rachel Edge providing the assist.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Slippery Rock leads the all-time series 21-5-8 after splitting the 2019 season series with Edinboro. In home games against the Fighting Scots, SRU owns a 10-4-2 record including a 3-2 victory at home earlier this season.
 
Over the last five home matchups against EU, The Rock has a 3-1-1 record. The two teams have met twice in the PSAC Tournament along with one meeting in the NCAA Tournament. In the postseason against Edinboro, Slippery Rock has a 3-0-0 record with its last playoff win over Edinboro coming in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock defeated East Stroudsburg, 1-0, in overtime in the PSAC Tournament semifinal round on a game-winning goal by Madison Johnson 81 seconds into overtime.
 
The contest was sent to overtime on the back of a stellar defensive effort from Slippery Rock, turning away all 15 shots by the Warriors including seven saves by Rock goalkeeper Emma Yoder.
 
• CHAMPIONSHIP MINDSET – Before switching back to the division format prior to the 2019 season, Slippery Rock had advanced to the PSAC title game five times in program history while holding a 3-2-0 record in those contests. The last conference championship for SRU came in 2012 when The Rock defeated California University (Pa.) 3-0.
 
• REGIONAL RANKINGS – Slippery Rock was ranked second in the Atlantic Region in the third set of regional rankings unveiled Wednesday by the NCAA Division ll Women's Soccer Committee.
 
SRU was ranked third in the first two installments of the regional rankings before climbing one spot this week. The regional rankings are used by the NCAA to determine which teams from each of the eight regions qualify for the 56-team NCAA Division ll playoffs. The tournament bracket will be unveiled Monday, Nov. 18.
 
The top-six teams in the Atlantic Region in the final set of rankings will earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament with the PSAC Tournament and Mountain East Conference Tournament Champions earning automatic bids.
 
The top two teams in the Atlantic Region in the final set of rankings will earn byes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament while the fourth and fifth seeds will play in one first round game with the third and sixth seeds meeting in the other.
 
• PROGRAM RECORD IN SIGHT – Should Slippery Rock defeat Edinboro in the PSAC Championship game, The Rock would eclipse the program record of 17 wins in a single-season set in 2007. 
 
• TWO-STRAIGHT – SRU has won back-to-back postseason games for the first time since winning three-straight PSAC Tournament games in 2012.
 
• LEADING THE WAY – Edge leads Slippery Rock with 38 points on 15 goals and eight assists. Minda and Kayla Swope are tied for second in points for The Rock with 21 points this season. Minda has eight goals and five assists while Swope has six goals and nine assists.
 
• SCORING MACHINE – With Johnson's game-winning goal against ESU, Slippery Rock has 54 goals this year, tied for the third-most goals scored in program history with the 2004 SRU women's soccer team.
 
Slippery Rock is closing in on the second-most goals in program history at 56 that was set in 1999. The program record for scores in a season is 67 that was set in 2003.
 
• ROCK SOLID DEFENSE – With the shutout of East Stroudsburg, Slippery Rock has allowed one goal or less in 17 of 19 games this season, having a 16-1-0 record in those contests.
 
• KEEPER COUNT – Yoder recorded her eighth shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over ESU with seven saves. On the season, Yoder has a .833 save percentage along with a 0.74 goals against average and 75 saves.
 
• ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK – Spence is third for Slippery Rock with 16 points on six goals and four assists followed by Sofia Harrison with 14 points on six goals and two assists this season. Shannon McIntyre has three goals and seven assists followed by Kaitlyn Barackman with three goals and two assists. Nagucki rounds out the scoring leaders for SRU this season with three goals and one assist.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS
• Last time out: The Fighting Scots defeated West Chester in the semifinal round of the PSAC Tournament, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
Manns netted a pass from Jenna derbis in the 6th minute to give Edinboro the early 1-0 advantage. The score would prove to be the game-winner on the back of a staunch defensive effort by the Fighting Scots against a potent WCU offense.
 
EU turned away all 14 shots by the Golden Rams, including eight saves by freshman goalkeeper Maddie Selva who relieved Anna Voelker in the 12th minute. Selva had not played a minute this season before Friday's PSAC semifinal.
 
• Edinboro is led on offense by Chatten who has a team-high 27 points on 11 goals and five assists this season.
 
• In goal for the Fighting Scots, Voelker has started all 20 games for EU in 2019, recording an .828 save percentage along with a 1.14 goals against average and 111 saves however, Voelker left Edinboro's tournament semifinal game against West Chester early, giving way to Selva who finished the contest. 
 
UP NEXT
Should Slippery Rock defeat Edinboro, it would earn an automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division ll Women's Soccer Tournament as PSAC Champions.
 
If SRU falls to the Fighting Scots, they would await the results of the final NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings released on Nov. 18. Should Slippery Rock be ranked in the top-six teams in the finals rankings, it would advance to the NCAA Tournament.
