PSAC Tournament Preview: Rock vs. IUP

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will begin the 2019 PSAC Tournament when it hosts IUP for a quarterfinal match 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will begin the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament when it hosts Indiana University (Pa.) for a quarterfinal match 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

ROCK PSAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Slippery Rock has won three PSAC Championships (2003, 2005 and 2012) with its last title coming in 2012. SRU has now qualified for the PSAC Tournament 17 times and has not missed out on appearing in the conference tournament since the 2009 season.
 
LAST MEETING
IUP defeated Slippery Rock, 2-1, on Oct. 26, 2019 at Indiana. The Crimson Hawks opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Mahogany Willis netted a pass from Gianinna Martyn to give Indiana the early 1-0 lead.
 
SRU struck back when Brooke Riefenstahl scored her first collegiate goal with Shannon McIntyre providing the assist in the 26th minute to tie the score at 1-1.
 
IUP answered when Willis scored her second goal of the contest in the 48th minute for what proved to be the game-winner on a pass from Alayna Ryan, securing the 2-1 conference victory for the Crimson Hawks.
 
SERIES HISTORY
SRU leads the all-time series 19-17-2. The Rock owns an 11-6-1 record at home against the Crimson Hawks including a 9-1-0 mark over the last 10 home games against IUP. Slippery Rock is outscoring Indiana 20-6 in those games. 
 
The teams have met three times in the PSAC Tournament with the last meeting occurring in 2006. The last Rock victory over the Crimson Hawks in the conference tournament came in a 1-0 victory during the 2005 PSAC Tournament quarterfinal.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock defeated Gannon, 4-0, on the back of a hat trick by Kaitlyn Barackman.
 
Barackman netted goals in the sixth, 10th and 52nd minute to give SRU the 3-0 advantage. Kayla Swope assisted on two of the scores while Shannon McIntyre assisted on one.
 
SRU secured the 4-0 home victory when Rachel Edge netted her team-leading 15th score of the season in the 53rd minute. Rock goalkeeper Emma Yoder finished the afternoon with six saves en route to her seventh shutout victory of the season.
 
• QUARTERFINAL HISTORY – Before switching back to the division format for the 2019 season, Slippery Rock had advanced out of the quarterfinals and into the semifinals four times. This season marks the first time SRU has been the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West since 2007. The PSAC switched to a division standings prior to this season after having a single conference standings format starting in the 2009 season. 

• PROGRAM HISTORY - With the win over Gannon, Slippery Rock tied the program record for the most wins in a regular season with 15. The school record for wins in a season is 17, which The Rock can tie if it advances to the PSAC Tournament Championship round and surpass if it wins the PSAC Championship. 

• REGIONAL RANKINGS – SRU was ranked third in the Atlantic Region in the second set of official NCAA Regional rankings unveiled Wednesday by the NCAA Division ll Women's Soccer Committee.
 
The regional rankings are the only official ranking used by the NCAA to determine which teams from each of the eight regions will qualify for the 56-team NCAA Division ll playoffs. The next set of regional rankings will be released Wednesday, Nov. 13, before the final selections are unveiled Monday, Nov. 18.
 
The top-six teams in the Atlantic Region in the final set of rankings will earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The tournament champions from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and the Mountain East Conference will both earn automatic bids with the four other at-large spots being determined by the rankings.
 
• LEADING THE WAY – The Rock is led on offense by Edge who has a team-best 38 points on 15 goals and eight assists. Jordyn Minda is second for SRU this season on offense with 21 points on eight goals and five assists.
 
• KEEPER COUNT – In goal for Slippery Rock, Yoder has an .827 save percentage along with a 0.77 goals against average and 67 saves.
 
• PSAC LEADERS – Edge leads the PSAC in points while being tied for the conference lead in goals. The sophomore is third in assists along with being tied for third in game-winning goals with four in 2019.
 
Swope is tied for first in assists in the PSAC  with nine while McIntyre ranks fourth with seven assists.
 
As a team, Slippery Rock leads the conference in scoring with 51 goals this season and a 2.83 goals per game average. The SRU defense has the second-best opponents' goals per game average allowing only 0.78 goals per game.

The Rock's +2.05 scoring margin is the second-best mark in the PSAC.
 
• BANK ON BARACKMAN – With her three-goal performance against Gannon, Barackman became the 14th Rock women's soccer player to record a hat trick in program history. The hat trick was also the second in the last three games for SRU, with Edge scoring three times against California University (Pa.) on Oct. 30.
 
• BACK FOR MORE – 13 current Rock players appeared in last year's PSAC Tournament quarterfinal game vs. Bloomsburg including Barackman, Edge, Minda, McIntyre, Sofia Harrison, Elise Forry, Madison Johnson, Taylor Gunn, Emily Arnold, Miranda Gallucci, Madison Thierry, Megan Sikora, Georgia Nagucki and Tori Norton.

Among players on the current roster, Barackman and Johnson lead the way in PSAC Tournament experience having played three postseason games each in their careers. 

• CONSISTENCY IS KEY - With a start in Tuesday's contest against IUP, Forry will extend her consecutive-games started streak to 56-straight games, the sixth-longest such streak in program history. 
 
• SCORING MACHINE – Slippery Rock's 51 goals scored this season are the most for a Rock women's soccer team since scoring 53 goals in 2004.
 
SRU's four goals against GU marked the 10th game this season The Rock has scored three or more goals.
 
• ROCK SOLID DEFENSE – With the shutout of Gannon, The Rock finishes the 2019 regular season with seven shutout victories marking the second-consecutive season SRU has finished with seven or more shutout wins.

• AGAINST INDIANA - In two games against IUP this season, Harrison, Nagucki, Riefenstahl and Swope have scored one goal apiece while Yoder recorded a combined four saves while allowing three goals. 
 
• ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK – Tyler Spence is third for SRU this season with six goals scored followed by Swope and Harrison with five each. McIntyre, Barackman and Nagucki round out the scoring leaders for Slippery Rock with three goals apiece in 2019.
 
Swope has guided The Rock offense with a team-high nine assists followed by Edge with eight and McIntyre with seven. Minda has assisted on five goals this season with Spence rounding out the assist leaders for SRU with four this season.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON HAWKS
• Last time out: Indiana fell at home to Clarion University, 1-0. Julianna Iocco scored what proved to be the game-winner for the Golden Eagles in the 66th minute on a pass from Courtni Hamm.
 
• The Crimson Hawks are led on offense by Willis who has 34 points on 15 goals and four assists. Taylor Karan is next for IUP with 11 points on five goals and one assist this season.
 
• In goal for Indiana, Madeline Smakulski has an .836 save percentage along with a 1.39 goals against average and 112 saves.

• In two games against The Rock in 2019, Willis has scored all three goals for the Crimson Hawks while Smakulski recorded a combined 15 saves while allowing four goals.
