Rock to host Clarion for PSAC West contest

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will host Clarion for a PSAC Western Division matchup at James Egli Field 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host Clarion University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division matchup at James Egli Field 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

RING OF HONOR
The ninth annual SRU Ring of Honor class will officially be inducted in a private ceremony Saturday night. The 2019 induction class in made up of Jerry Ferrone, Thomas Hayes, Alison Hindley, Dave Keller, Dr. Robert Marcus, Dana O'Neill, and Mitch Walters along with the 2005 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships teams.

LAST MEETING

Slippery Rock defeated Clarion on the road, 3-0. SRU got the scoring started when Sofia Harrison netted her first score of 2019 in the sixth minute to give Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead.
 
Rachel Edge extended The Rock lead when she played a pass from Jordyn Minda into the net for her second goal of the season at 9:30 to stretch the SRU lead to 2-0.
 
The Rock secured a 3-0 road victory over Clarion when Minda scored for the second time in 2019 off a free kick from Shannon McIntyre and a pass from Kayla Swope. SRU goalkeeper Emma Yoder recorded one save in 90 clean minutes en route to the sophomore's first shutout victory of the year.

Slippery Rock leads the all-time series 23-0-2, holding a 11-0-0 record against the Golden Eagles at home. The Rock has shutout CU in five of the last seven matchups including each of the last three.

SCOUTING THE ROCK

• LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock recorded a 1-0 road victory against Gannon University. The Rock opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Swope netted her fourth goal of the season to give SRU an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Rock defense stifled the Golden Knight offensive attack throughout, allowing only two first-half shots. GU settled in defensively following the score, defending the next two Slippery Rock shots to close out the half.
 
Gannon attacked the Slippery Rock defense coming out of halftime, recording nine consecutive shots with five being on target. The stout Rock defense stood up to the test with Yoder leading the charge in goal, recording five second half saves to secure the 1-0 victory.

• NO PLACE LIKE HOME – Slippery Rock has won three-straight home games after dropping the season-opener to Walsh. In those home games, SRU is outscoring opponents 11-2.
 
• BOUNCE BACK – After falling on the road to Edinboro University on Oct. 2, The Rock bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Gannon. The win improved SRU's record following a loss to 30-9-2 all-time while outscoring opponents 80-29 in those games.
 
• SIZZLING SWOPE – Swope continued the strong start to her collegiate career at Gannon with her fourth goal of 2019. Swope's four goals through the first 10 games of her career marks the second consecutive season a Slippery Rock freshman has accomplished the feat with Minda doing so last season. 
 
• KEEPER COUNT – Yoder turned in a stellar performance in goal for The Rock against Gannon, recording six saves in her fourth shutout victory of the season. Among PSAC goalkeepers, Yoder ranks tied for third in shutouts (4), third in goals against average (.628), fourth in save percentage (.879) and tied for fourth in goals allowed (7).
 
• PSAC LEADERS – Edge and Swope are tied for the most assists in the conference with five while Edge ranks second in the PSAC in points with 19. Swope is tied for second-most in the conference with three game-winning goals. McIntyre is tied for the second most assists in the conference with four. As a team, Slippery Rock ranks third in the conference in goals scored with 25 while ranking tied for fourth with seven goals allowed. The Rock's 1.63 scoring differential is sixth best in the PSAC, averaging 2.27 goals per game while allowing .64 goals per contest. 
 
• AGAINST CLARION – Minda has two goals in her career againt Clarion while Harrison and Edge scored a goal against Clarion earlier this season. Kaitlyn Barackman rounds out the scoring for The Rock against Clarion with a goal in 2017. 
 
• STANDINGS CHECK – Slippery Rock trails for first place Edinboro by one-point in the PSAC Western Division standings. Mercyhurst sits in third place with 15 points followed by IUP and Seton Hill who are tied with 12 points. Gannon (10 points), Pitt-Johnstown (nine points), California (six points) and Clarion (zero points) round out the division standings.
 
• ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK – Swope and Harrison are tied for second in goals this season with four, followed by Minda and Spence who have three goals each. Georgia Nagucki rounds out the scoring attack for The Rock with one goal.
 
McIntyre is second in assists with four followed by Barackman with two. Nagucki, Minda, Brooke Riefenstahl, Katy Ericson, Tatum Bradley, Julia Mascaro and Megan Sikora each have one assist this season.

•  CONSISTENCY IS KEY - Elise Forry recorded her 52nd consecutive start against Gannon, the sixth-most in Rock women's soccer program history. McIntyre has now appeared 52 consecutive games for Slippery Rock, tied with Forry for the 11th longest streak for a Rock women's soccer player. 
 
THIS WEEK IN ROCK HISTORY
Oct. 12, 2018 – Slippery Rock upsets No. 14 Millersville on the road, 2-1. Brooke Testa and Skye Kramer provided the offense with scores in the 33rd and 60th minute respectively.
 
Rock goalkeeper Kylie Downs turned in a stellar performance against a potent Marauder attack on offense, recording a season-high 11 saves.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
• Last time out: Clarion is coming off a 2-0 home loss to Indiana. The Crimson Hawks took a 1-0 lead when Mahogany Willis netted her conference leading 11th goal of the season in the 46th minute.
 
IUP secured the 2-0 win in the 74th minute when Alayna Ryan scored on a pass from Mya Hilliard.
 
• The Golden Eagles are led on offense by Andie Hill and Madison Spitko who have four points on two goals each. Leann Wynder rounds out the scoring attack for Clarion with two points on one goal.
 
Julianna Iocco, Dani McNally, Cameron Rodriguez and Jaci Bowser have guided the Clarion offense this season with one assist each.
 
• Brigid Stermel and Brynn Markley have split time in goal for the Golden Eagles this season. Stermel has a .776 save percentage along with a 1.93 goals against average and 45 saves. In two starts this season, Markley has a .556 save percentage with a 3.62 goals against average and 10 saves.
 
• Clarion ranks tied for 18th in the conference with five goals scored this season while sitting 14th in goals allowed with 21. The Golden Eagles -1.77 scoring differential ranks 17th in the conference ahead of Mansfield University.
