Rock ready for Mercyhurst and Edinboro matchups

The Slippery Rock softball team will host Mercyhurst Friday, Edinboro Saturday and play at the Fighting Scots Sunday for a set of pivotal PSAC West games.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team will host Mercyhurst University Friday, Edinboro University Saturday and play at the Fighting Scots Sunday for a set of pivotal Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division games.
 
SRU will host the Lakers Friday afternoon in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. First pitch of that doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m. Score updates and recaps of those games will be posted when that information becomes available.
 
On Saturday, the Fighting Scots will come to Slippery Rock for a doubleheader. It will also be The Rock's Play4TheCure Cancer Awareness games. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the SRU Softball Complex.
 
SRU will close out its weekend Sunday with a pair of road contests at Edinboro. First pitch of that twinbill will also be at 1 p.m.

MERCYHURST SERIES HISTORY
Mercyhurst leads the all-time series against Slippery Rock, 37-33. The Rock and the Lakers met earlier this season on April 11. After losing game one, 4-0, SRU bounced back for a 7-4 victory in game two. These teams have split the last two season series dating back to 2016.
 
EDINBORO SERIES HISTORY
Edinboro holds the all-time series lead at 72-57. The Fighting Scots have also claimed nine of the last 12 matchups dating back to 2015. SRU's last win against EU was at Edinboro on April 14, 2017.
 
PLAY4THECURE
SRU's games against Edinboro on Saturday will be their Play4TheCure Cancer Awareness games. Slippery Rock will be collecting donations during and after games through various activities including a 50/50 raffle, a home run derby and a silent auction. The proceeds will go to the National Foundation of Cancer Research.

THE ROCK NOTES
IN THE HUNT – With a 17-14 overall record, Slippery Rock has found itself in sixth place in the Atlantic Region's initial set of regional rankings released by the NCAA Wednesday. If SRU were to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, it would mark the first appearance for The Rock since 2008.
 
THREE-IN-A-ROW – After losing the first game of last weekend against Seton Hill, The Rock bounced back to win three straight games. They defeated Seton Hill, 4-2, and then swept a doubleheader at California (Pa.), 5-0 and 6-1.
 
THE BATS – Slippery Rock hit .277 (46-for-166) as a team last week. SRU also recorded 11 multi-hit games from seven different players including Lauren Hawley, Becca Roesch, Caitlyn MacKelvey, Emily Nagle, Kailey Myers, Megan Brown and McKenzie Garland. SRU is now hitting .285 (240-for-843) for the season. SRU's 240 hits rank fourth in the PSAC.
 
THEY GET ON BASE – Although they were limited last weekend, SRU still ranks third in the conference in walks (83).
 
HELPFUL HAWLEY – Hawley proved to be quite the help out of the cleanup spot last weekend. The senior raised her batting average 38 points to .330 (29-for-88) after hitting .421 (8-for-19) last week tallying a home run, five RBI and posting three multi-hit games.
 
ROCK HURLERS – Slippery Rock's pitching was a key component of the team's 4-2 record last week. Camie Shumaker, Andria Copelli, Paige Flore and Brooke Dawson combined for a 1.54 ERA (9 ER in 41.0 IP).
 
• AN IMPRESSIVE STAFF – SRU's pitching staff has been consistent all season ranking fifth in the PSAC in team ERA (3.03). Rock hurlers have also combined for six shutouts, which is tied for second in the league.
 
DON'T DOUBT DAWSON – Dawson proved to be extremely helpful last week and was selected as the PSAC Western Division Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 with a 0.46 ERA (1 ER in 15.1 IP) in four appearances (two starts). Her victory was a complete-game shutout at California and she is now tied for first on SRU's all-time career wins list with 30.

LAKERS NOTES
• Mercyhurst has three players hitting above .300 including Ellie Dougher (.344), Jolene Teller (.333) and Sarah Koscho (.308)
 
• Koscho leads the team in hits (28), doubles (5), RBI (15), total bases (36) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (1).
 
• The Lakers have a team ERA of 3.87 (102 ER in 184.1 IP) using five different hurlers including Tori Pierucci, Sarah Eschleman, Heather Nye, Jacquelin Gardner and Allison Smith-DiLisi.
 
• Pierucci has a 4-10 record with a 2.21 ERA (34 ER in 107.2 IP) while Eschleman (5.58 ERA) and Nye (6.21 ERA) have also posted one win apiece in the circle.

FIGHTING SCOTS NOTES
• The Fighting Scots are hitting just .233 (113-for-484) with six home runs and 62 RBI. 
 
• Edinboro is led by Shannon Gilbert and Danna Heh. Gilbert is hitting .326 (14-for-43) with one home run and nine RBI. Heh is batting .315 (17-for-54) with eight stolen bases and 10 runs scored. 
 
• In the circle, EU has a team ERA of 6.06 (101 ER in 116.2 IP) and has seen innings from Carley Nasca, Amanda Metz, Kerri Stevens and Abbie Staley.  
 
• Nasca is 2-6 with a 4.14 ERA (27 ER in 45.2 IP), Metz is 1-5 with a 6.75 ERA (36 ER in 37.1 IP) and Stevens is 1-4 with a 7.74 ERA (35 ER in 31.2 IP).
