SCOUTING THE ROCK
•
LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock withstood a second half surge by Mercyhurst to defeat the Lakers, 68-66, in a wire-to-wire victory on Feb. 10 (
Box Score).
• Slippery Rock enters Saturday's game slotted sixth in the PSAC West standings, 1.5 games ahead of seventh-place Mercyhurst and three games in front of eighth-place Pitt-Johnstown. The top six teams in both the PSAC West and PSAC East standings at the end of the season qualify for the conference tournament. With four games to play in the regular season, SRU is also within striking distance of fifth-place Gannon, which leads The Rock by just 1.5 games.
• SRU is on pace to qualify for the PSAC Tournament for the first time since the 2014-15 season and just the second time in the last 12 years.
• A win against Clarion would give Slippery Rock 10 league wins in a season for the first time in school history.
• If Slippery Rock can win three of its final four games in the regular season it would assure itself of the program's first winning percentage of .500 or better since going 15-12 in 2001-02 (17 years).
• SRU connected on eight 3-pointers against Mercyhurst. The eight triples were the most in a game by Slippery Rock since it converted 12 3-pointers against Mansfield on Jan. 13. SRU is 7-2 this season when it makes at least seven 3-pointers in a game.
• Slippery Rock is the third best rebounding team in the conference at 40.3 rebounds per game thanks in no small part to a pack-like mentality that has seen a PSAC-best five different players average at least 4.5 rpg in
Brooke Hinderliter (7.0),
Krista Pietropola (6.0),
Morgan Henderson (4.8),
LeeAnn Gibson (4.7) and
Mallory Heinle (4.5).
• For the majority of the season, Slippery Rock has been extremely reliable at the free throw line. Through 23 games, SRU has made 74.3 percent of its free throw attempts, which is good enough to rank third in the PSAC. Hinderliter is shooting a team-high 86.1 percent at the foul line.
Madison Johnson (.773),
Sierra Fordham (.773) and Henderson (.771) all shoot above 75 percent from foul line as well.
• SRU has blocked 92 shots this season and needs just three more rejections Saturday to break the previous program single-season record of 94 blocks in 1992-93. Nine different players have recorded at least five blocks for The Rock this season. Heinle leads the team with 21 blocks followed in the top three by Henderson (18) and Pietropola (15).
• Slippery Rock held Mercyhurst to a field goal percentage of just .317 to lower its opponents field goal percentage this season to just .369, the third lowest total in the PSAC. If the season ended today, The Rock's .369 field goal percentage defense would easily beat the previous Rock single-season record of .378 (2000-01).
• Hinderliter, who scored 18 points in SRU's win at Mercyhurst, leads SRU with per game averages of 14.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists in addition to also making 1.1 steals per game. A highly-versatile threat, Hinderliter is one of just three players in the PSAC to average at least 14 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game this season.
• In three career games against Clarion, Hinderliter has led SRU to a pair of wins over the Golden Eagles while averaging 17.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
• Gibson has scored at least 10 points in four of The Rock's past six games. She was SRU's second leading scorer in the Mercyhurst win with 10 points. The sophomore forward has made 31-of-56 shots (55.4 percent) in her last 10 games played.
• Pietropola has been a force on the glass in the second half of the season with 7.3 rebounds per game in The Rock's last 12 contests.
• In addition to ranking second on the team in blocks and third in rebounding, Henderson also leads The Rock in field goal percentage (.486) and is third in scoring (8.3 ppg).
• Saturday will mark Heinle's 105th collegiate game, only seven other players in program history have played in more games. Heinle, who had six points off of a pair of 3-pointers against Mercyhurst, now ranks 19th in Rock history in career 3-pointers made with 58 and is six rebounds away from cracking SRU's top 20 career rebounding ledger as well.
• The guard duo of Johnson and Fordham have both proven more than capable of providing The Rock with points in bunches this season. Johnson, who ranks second on The Rock in scoring at 9.4 ppg, has scored at least 10 points in a game 12 times this season while Fordham is coming off of a recent six-game stretch in which she averaged 12.7 ppg. Johnson scored 17 points against Clarion earlier in the year.
•
Skyla O'Connor has played in 23 games as a freshman, recording a team-best 26 steals. The 26 steals are already the 12th most in Rock freshman history. Only seven Rock players have had 25 or more steals during their rookie years dating back to the 2000-01 season.
