Rock battles IUP in home-opener Wednesday

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will host Indiana (Pa.) 7 p.m. Wednesday night for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game under the lights at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania 7 p.m. Wednesday night for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game under the lights at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock was unable to overcome an early goal by Indiana in a narrow 1-0 loss last Saturday, Sept. 2. Julianna Esposito and Brooke Testa mustered the only two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Kylie Downs made two saves on three shots on goal.
 
SERIES HISTORY
SRU has lost three out of the last four games to IUP, but still maintain a 17-15-2 lead in the all-time series. The Rock has won four out of the last five matches at home.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• LAST TIME OUT - Slippery Rock lost a non-conference game at West Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-1. The Bobcats scored both of their goals in the 65th minute. SRU responded with a goal at 69:01 as Shannon McIntyre scored off a corner kick from Tess Keeley, but The Rock was unable to tie the game in the one-goal loss.
 
• HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU? - For the second time in her career, Keeley has recorded an assist in back-to-back games. The last time an SRU player recorded an assist in at least three straight games was in 2014 when Andrea Felix (2013-16) tallied an assist in four consecutive matches from Sept. 30, through Oct. 11. Keeley also has 14 career assists ranking her tied for 15th all-time in Slippery Rock women's soccer history with Jami Wilson (2004-07).

• "HOLY COW NUMBER 60" - Senior Hayley Burkholder will likely start in her 60th career game at Slippery Rock. Burkholder has started in every SRU match dating back to Sept. 4, 2014. 
 
• DEUCES WILD - Thus far in 2017 Slippery Rock has four players that have all tallied 2 points apiece including Esposito (one goal), McIntyre (one goal), Keeley (two assists) and Madison Johnson (one goal). Testa has recorded the only other point for The Rock with one assist.
 
• GO TO YOUR HOME - The Rock is 12-7-1 in games played in Slippery Rock during head coach Jessica Griggs' tenure. Also, SRU's last home match against IUP was a 4-0 shut out victory on Sept. 19, 2015.
 
• THE RIVALS - Wednesday's contest will mark the 35th time SRU women's soccer and IUP will meet. In that span, SRU has outscored IUP 43-35, two games have gone into overtime and the teams have met in the PSAC tournament three times.
 
• PAST SUCCESS - In The Rock's last win against Indiana, current SRU players Keeley and Testa helped get Slippery Rock on the scoreboard. Keeley tallied an assist while Testa found the back of the net for a goal.

• IUP enters the game having won a 2-0 non-conference game over Davis & Elkins.
 
• The Crimson Hawks are led offensively by Gianna Parlavecchio who has recorded five points on two goals and one assist.
 
• Other offensive contributors so far for the Crimson Hawks are Kallie Conte (one goal) and McKenna Keffel (one goal).
 
• Goalkeepers Madeline Smakulski and Makenzie Witzel have split time this year. Smakulski has eight saves while Witzel has stopped three shots.
