Rock to open PSAC West action Monday

The Slippery Rock softball team opens its PSAC West schedule Monday afternoon against Mercyhurst.

*Schedule Note: Sunday's doubleheader at California (Pa.) (April 2) has been moved to April 5th at 3 and 5 p.m. Wednesday's home doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit has also been postponed to a later date. 

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team opens its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division schedule Monday afternoon against Mercyhurst University at the SRU Softball Complex before meeting with California University of Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon at Lilley Field.  

First pitch against Mercyhurst is scheduled for 1 p.m., while the doubleheader against California is slated to start at 3 p.m.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
Team Notes: As a team, Slippery Rock is batting .277, which ranks 10th in the PSAC. The Rock's pitching unit has combined for a 2.85 ERA, and has the third lowest opponent batting average in the conference at .244.  
 
Top Bats: Emily Nagle and Caitlin Baxter are both off to great starts to the season at the plate. Nagle is hitting .475 with 10 runs scored, four doubles, eight RBI, four stolen bases and a .492 on-base percentage while Baxter is batting .400 with eight runs, two home runs, nine RBI and a .441 on-base percentage. In addition to stealing a team-high nine bases, Megan Brown is also batting .309 with seven RBI. After starting the season 0-for-17, Allie Fischer has come on to record seven hits in her last 19 at-bats (.368). 
 
Top Arms: Brooke Dawson has accounted for four of The Rock's six wins this season. Over 49.2 innings pitched, Dawson has compiled a 1.55 ERA and 40 strikeouts. She ranks eighth in the entire league, and fifth in the PSAC West, in ERA. Carly DeRose, who is six victories away from becoming The Rock's all-time wins leader, is 2-3 with a 3.11 ERA, 26 strikeouts and a team-low .202 batting average against.
 
Head Coach: Slippery Rock head coach Stacey Rice is in her third season at the helm after leading SRU to a 20-23 record last spring and a spot in the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2009. The 20 victories were the most for Slippery Rock since the 2010 season. A 2008 graduate of SRU, Rice is one of the most decorated players in program history. She is still the all-time leader in eight different statistical categories including runs scored (143) and hits (186).

SCOUTING THE VULCANS
Team Notes: California is hitting .300 collectively as a team, which is fourth in the conference and first in the PSAC West. The Vulcans pitching staff has an ERA of 2.64 and has only allowed 54 runs this spring.
 
Top Bats: Paige Wilson is hitting .412 with seven RBI and five runs to lead the Vulcans, while Jacquelyn Fowler has a team-high 14 RBI and two home runs. Additionally, Megan Jahoda, Emily Price and Hailey Wilson are all batting above .380.
 
Top Arms: In the circle, Taylor Robblee owns a conference-best 0.98 ERA. Kaity Davis is the reigning PSAC West Pitcher of the Week after tossing the program's first perfect game in over a decade last week against Bowie State. Davis has an 1.89 ERA and team-best 34 strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Team Notes: The Lakers rank near the bottom in the PSAC in most statistical categories this season. Mercyhurst is batting .244 as a team, which ranks 15th in all of the PSAC, while the pitching staff has a combined 4.82 ERA, which is 16th in the conference.
 
Top Bats: The Lakers are led by Emily Hair and Rachel DiBartolomeo. Hair is batting .386 with three home runs and 18 RBI while DiBartolomeo has also driven in 16 runs with four home runs, 18 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Cassandra Egelston leads the PSAC West with 12 stolen bases.
 
Top Arms: Anna Cochis and Heather Nye have shouldered the majority of the responsibility in the circle for the Lakers. Cochis is 1-6 with a 3.38 ERA and 28 strikeouts while Nye is 4-5 with a 6.42 ERA with 22 strikeouts.
