Rock volleyball opens season with two wins at Pfeiffer Tournament

The Slippery Rock volleyball team started the 2015 season with a pair of victories at the Pfieffer University Tournament.

MISENHEIMER, N.C.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team opened the 2015 season with two wins at the Pfeiffer University Tournament on Friday night.

The Rock (2-0) opened the day with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21) victory over UVa-Wise before ending the night with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-16) win against Salem International.

SRU earned its first win of the day thanks in part to outside hitter junior Leah Jones and her team-high 16 kills.

Freshman middle hitter Shayla Ray contributed 11 kills in her first collegiate match, while junior middle hitter Jaden Zimmer added 10.

Sophomore Haley Defibaugh passed out a team-high 47 assists in the win.

The Rock got out to a 2-set lead over UVa-Wise before the Cavaliers battled back with a 7-1 run midway through the third set to take a slight lead that they would hold onto as they took the third set from The Rock. SRU got out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set before the Cavs scored six straight points to bring it to 11-11. The teams played close for the remainder of the set, but SRU closed out the match outscoring UVa-Wise 4-2 to get its first win of the season.

Jones also led Slippery Rock in the 3-0 sweep of Salem International later in the evening with a team-high 12 kills. She also played a crucial role on defense with a match-best 12 digs.

Zimmer and sophomore outside hitter Lamija Alisic each added eight kills apiece for The Rock.. Additionally, Alisic served a match-high five aces.

The teams battled back and forth in the first set, but SRU scored the final four points of the set to jump out to a 1-0 lead over Salem International. The Rock dominated the second set from the beginning, going on five and six point runs to maintain a healthy lead for the entire set. Both teams played even in the third set, but SRU closed it out with eight unanswered points to get the sweep of the Tigers. 

Slippery Rock will take on Johnson C. Smith Saturday at 1 p.m. before closing out the tournament against host Pfeiffer later in the day at 5 p.m.
