Tyler Kachelries claimed the individual title in the javelin and
David Reinhardt was named the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track and field team to a third place finish in the team standings at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships that finished Saturday at Shippensburg University.
The hosting Raiders ran away with their sixth straight team title with a conference record 278 points, blowing away the field. East Stroudsburg earned runner-up honors with 104 points, followed by Slippery Rock with 90 points. Kutztown placed fourth with 83 points and Lock Haven rounded out the top five with 66.5 points.
Kachelries picked up the only individual title for Slippery Rock's men on Saturday, winning the javelin with an NCAA provisional throw of 65.46 meters. The Rock scored all three of their athletes in the event, with
David Reinhardt placing fourth with an NCAA provisional throw of 60.74 meters and
Max Knight placing sixth at 54.38 meters.
Reinhardt was named the Most Outstanding Field Event Athlete after placing in all four throwing events he entered. He was fourth in the javelin, third in the discus with a throw of 47.97 meters, eighth in the shot put with a throw of 14.28 meters and fifth in the hammer with a throw of 51.69 meters. In total, he scored 16 of The Rock's 90 points.
The next highest finish for an SRU athlete came from
Morgan Elliott with a second place showing in a photo finish in the 1,500-meter run. The top four runners were separated by less than a second. He came home in 4:00.24.
All three Rock men's relays recorded top five finishes, led by the 4x100-meter relay of
Brandon Vanderbrook,
Trevor Foley,
Hans Lubich and
Hunter Williams that placed fourth in 42.09 seconds.
The 4x800-meter relay took fourth in 7:56.70 and was comprised of
Dalton Zebrak,
Ryan Thompson,
Tyler Melius and Elliott.
The meet closed with the 4x400-meter relay team of Foley,
Nathaniel Helfferich, Lubich and
Brian Merritt placing fifth in 3:18.84.
Williams scored points in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. He took seventh in the 400m in 49.41 seconds and was eighth in the 200m in 22.78 seconds.
The final points for Slippery Rock came from Helfferich in the 400-meter hurdles with a seventh place finish in 57.38 seconds.
Slippery Rock will send select athletes to compete at Allegheny College May 9 and will close the 2014 season with a group of elite athletes at the NCAA National Championships May 22-24 at Grand Valley State. Accepted entries for the national meet will be announced the week before.
