ResultsSHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University track and field teams got off to a solid start Thursday on the first day of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships from Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg University.
The only final event that was contested Thursday was the 10,000-meter run for both the men and the women. The other events contested Thursday were the first five events of the men's decathlon and the first four events of the women's heptathlon.
Slippery Rock scored its only point of the night in the men's 10,000-meter run, when
Alex Koksal placed eighth in a time of 32:42.00.
Jaron Martin narrowly missed a scoring spot with a 10th place finish in 33:08.45.
The Rock women almost scored a point in the 10,000-meter run, but
Shannon Byerly came up just short in ninth place with a time of 39:03.86.
Slippery Rock's top performance of the opening day belonged to
Sabrina Anderson, who put forth an impressive showing to lead the heptathlon after the first day. She recorded 2,815 points by leading all athletes in the competition in the high jump and placing second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Anderson cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 1.69 meters in the high jump, a season best, to score 842 points in that event alone. She also ran 15.62 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to score 762 points. She then recorded a shot put throw of 10.09 meters for 535 points and closed her day with a time of 27.44 seconds in the 200-meter dash for 676 points.
Tara Catone sits 12th in the heptathlon after the first day with 2,316 points.
The Rock's men got a strong showing from
Andrew Greenslade on the first day of the decathlon. The senior was dominant in the shot put and sits third in the standings with 3,220 points after five events. His best mark was a throw of 13.47 meters in the shot put for 696 points, more than 2.0 meters better than any other athletes in the event.
Nate Zigler sits 10th after the first day with 2,966 points and
Andrew Lovano is 14th with 2,698 points.
Friday will provide the first look at how the team standings will shake out, when many event finals will be contested and qualifying rounds for the shorter races will take place. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The meet will conclude Saturday.
