Elliott, Picot lead Rock at Bucknell

Morgan Elliott broke the SRU men's 1,500-meter record that was set in 1992 and Jenny Picot hit the NCAA provisional mark in the women's 5,000-meter run to lead SRU at Bucknell Saturday night.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Morgan Elliott broke the Slippery Rock men's 1,500-meter record that has stood since 1992 and Jenny Picot shattered her personal best in the 5,000-meter run to lead The Rock track and field teams at the Bucknell University Distance Carnival Saturday night.
 
Elliott won the 1,500-meter run that featured 81 total competitors with a blistering time of 3:50.38, topping the previous Slippery Rock record of 3:51.49 that was set by Eric Laughlin in 1992. Elliot's time is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and currently ranks seventh among all NCAA Division II runners this spring.
 
Elliot's effort led a total of five Rock men to at least a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying mark Saturday night.
 
Michael Beegle and Jaron Martin each hit the PSAC standard in the 5,000-meter run. Beegle placed 22nd in 15:06.10 and Martin was 39th in 15:13.82.
 
Ryan Thompson and Theodore Reynolds reached the conference mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Thompson was 27th in 9:46.12 and Reynolds was 31st in 9:50.24.
 
Picot led the Slippery Rock women's team Saturday night with an NCAA provisional qualifying performance of 17:17.17 in the 5,000-meter run, good enough to place 15th in the invitational section of the event. Her mark currently ranks 14th among all NCAA Division II runners this spring.
 
Picot led a total of three SRU women to at least a PSAC qualifying standard Saturday.
 
Kara Styles placed 32nd in the invite section of the 5,000 in 18:13.22.
 
Angelica Bagwell capped the PSAC qualifiers with a 26th place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:38.52.
 
Only distance runners are competing at Bucknell this weekend, while the remainder of The Rock's athletes are competing Saturday at George Mason. Competition will conclude for SRU at Bucknell Sunday morning when the 800-meter runners compete.
