Shepherd rallies by Rock in OT, 17-16

Shepherd erased a four-goal deficit late and rallied to defeat Slippery Rock 17-16 in overtime Saturday in non-conference play.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Shepherd University women's lacrosse team erased a late deficit with a 6-2 run to close regulation and force overtime and then scored the game-winner in the first extra session to hand Slippery Rock a 17-16 loss in non-conference action Saturday.

Slippery Rock (3-2) had a two-game win streak snapped in its first overtime game of the season, while Shepherd (6-3) snapped a two-game losing skid.

The win is the first for Shepherd over Slippery Rock as The Rock entered the game with a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series.

Slippery Rock led 9-6 at halftime and 14-10 with 16:49 to play, but Shepherd rattled off four unanswered goals to tie the game at 14-14 with 13:30 to play.

The Rock answered with two goals from Erin Wilcox to regain a 16-14 lead with 6:18 to play, but Shepherd tallied goals at 4:18 and 2:37 to tie the game.

Paige Costantino had a chance to win the game with 14 seconds left in regulation, but her shot was saved.

Shepherd won the opening draw in the six-minute overtime session and scored on its first possession to take a 17-16 lead with 5:22 to play in the extra period. Slippery Rock would win the first draw control after the three-minute stoppage, but turned the ball over and could not get a tying shot attempt off.

Wilcox led the Slippery Rock attack with four goals and six draw controls. Chynna Chan scored three goals and handed out one assist and Costantino and Jess Verbic each scored three goals to cap the top scorers.

Kaytlin Callaghan added two goals and one assist, Caitlynn Palladino scored one goal and Katie Cook rounded out the point scorers with one assist.

Shepherd was able to contain The Rock's leading scorer, holding Morgan Pettit to no points for the first time in five games this season.

Hannah Houde took the loss in goal after allowing all 17 goals and recording 13 saves in 66 minutes of action. She was forced to face 40 shots after the Rams outshot Slippery Rock 40-23 in total efforts.

Shepherd also managed a 29-22 advantage in ground balls. Slippery Rock posted a 21-16 edge in draw controls, but turned the ball over 28 times. Shepherd turned the ball over 17 times in winning the possession battle.

The Rams were led by three goals and four assists from Georgia Karr, while Christina Ferrara added four goals and one assist and Hunter Morris added four goals.

Lily Schmulowitz earned the win in goal, recording five saves, including the biggest of the game on the stop with 14 seconds left in regulation.

Things don't get an easier for Slippery Rock on the horizon, as the team will open conference play with three straight games on the road before returning home. The first of those games is set for March 25 at 4 p.m. at Seton Hill.
