Rock men wrap spring break at Shamrock Invitational

Slippery Rock recorded 21 PSAC qualifying marks and one NCAA provisional mark at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team recorded 21 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and one NCAA provisional mark at the Shamrock Invitational that wrapped up Saturday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach.

For the second straight week Tyler Kachelries led the way with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw in the javelin. He placed sixth in a loaded Division I field with a throw of 61.58 meters. Teammate Max Knight narrowly missed the NCAA mark to place 11th with a throw of 56.59 meters.

Hunter Williams had an impressive weekend to lead the track athletes. He posted his fastest time of the season in the 400-meter dash at 48.52 seconds to place seventh and followed that up with a near season-best time of 22.06 seconds in the 200-meter dash. He was joined by Brandon Vanderbrook in hitting the PSAC standard in the 200m after Vanderbrook clocked a time of 22.70 seconds.

The highest finishing athlete Slippery Rock had all weekend was Michael Beegle in the 5,000-meter run with a fifth place finish in a PSAC time of 15:22.21.

David Reinhardt matched Kachelries with a sixth place finish in the discus with a PSAC throw of 45.75 meters.

A pair of field event athletes took seventh place honors, led by Jordan Pacheco in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.60 meters. John Piserchio and Cody Colagrande also hit the PSAC mark in the pole vault with clearances of 4.45 meters. The other seventh place finish belonged to Victor Santoyo with a clearance of 1.90 meters in the high jump.

The Rock recorded two more top-10 finishes with ninth place showings from Tyler Melius in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.98 and Nate Zigler in the decathlon with a score of 5,711 points. Andrew Greenslade also had a good showing in the decathlon to place 11th with 5,579 points.

Reinhardt was the best-placed Rock thrower in two other events in addition to his discus performance. He hit the PSAC standard in the shot put with a toss of 13.62 meters and reached the conference mark in the hammer throw at 48.58 meters. He was joined in reaching the PSAC mark in the hammer by Billy Martin at 47.61 meters and Nick Turk at 44.17 meters. Greenslade also reached the PSAC mark in the shot put while competing in the decathlon with a toss of 13.89 meters.

The Rock's final PSAC qualifying marks of the weekend came in the 400-meter hurdles. Trevor Foley posted a time of 55.33 seconds and Nathaniel Helfferich ran 55.65 seconds.

Slippery Rock has spent the last nine days in Myrtle Beach training and competing in two meets. The Rock will next travel back to the Carolinas with a trip to the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State next weekend.
