MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University men's outdoor track and field team hit 12 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks on the second day of the Coastal Carolina University Invitational Saturday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Slippery Rock picked up two third place finishes and three top five finishes on the second day of the meet.
Tyler Melius placed third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:00.30 to lead the mid-distance runners.
Cody Colagrande led the field event athletes with a third place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.45 meters.
The final top five finish on the day belonged to
Ryan Thompson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He took fifth in 9:43.39.
The Rock got a strong performance from its 4x400-meter relay in the final event of the meet, placing sixth in 3:20.56. The relay consisted of
Jacob VanHouten,
Nathaniel Helfferich,
Trevor Foley and
Hunter Williams.
Williams recoded an individual PSAC qualifying mark in the 200-meter dash with a ninth place finish in 22.01 seconds.
Foley and Helfferich both hit the PSAC standard in the 400-meter hurdles. Foley was seventh in 55.11 seconds and Helfferich was 10th in 56.09 seconds.
The final PSAC mark on the track came from
Brandon Vanderbrook, who placed 20th in the 100-meter dash in 11.16 seconds.
Three throwers reached the PSAC standard in the discus and two throwers hit the conference qualifying mark in the shot put to round out The Rock's top performances.
David Reinhardt hit the mark in both events, leading the way with a 12th place finish in the discus with a throw of 43.59 meters and then placing 18th in the shot put with a toss of 13.81 meters.
Billy Martin was 19th in the discus at 41.83 meters and
Andrew Greenslade was 21st at 41.14 meters.
Jerrod Galloway led the way in the shot put with an 11th place finish and a toss of 14.40 meters.
Slippery Rock will remain in Myrtle Beach for the next week to train before competing in the Shamrock Invitational next weekend at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium to close out the annual spring break trip.
