Taylor hits NCAA automatic mark in outdoor opener

Sam Taylor hit the NCAA automatic qualifier in the javelin to lead The Rock women and Tyler Kachelries hit the NCAA provisional standard in the javelin to lead The Rock men Friday at the Coastal Carolina University Invitational.

– The Slippery Rock University outdoor track and field teams recorded 14 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying performances, one NCAA automatic qualifying performance, one NCAA provisional mark and recorded three wins on the first day of the Coastal Carolina University Invitational Friday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Sam Taylor provided the highlight of the opening day of the outdoor season for The Rock women when she won the javelin with an NCAA automatic qualifying throw of 46.68 meters.

She was joined in reaching at leas the PSAC standard in the event by Tara Catone, who placed eighth with a toss of 36.98 meters.

Emily Moroco won the unseeded section of the 200-meter dash in a PSAC qualifying time of 26.07 seconds and London Parris won the unseeded section of the 400-meter hurdles in a PSAC qualifying mark of 1:07.50 to cap the event winners from Friday.

The Rock's women also got a PSAC qualifying performance from Shannon Byerly on the track after she took fifth in the 10,000-meter run in 38:43.94.

Slippery Rock's women finished the day by having three athletes reach the PSAC standard in the pole vault. Julia Cain took fourth with a clearance of 3.50 meters. Kaitlyn Clark was 10th at 3.35 meters and Megan Matrisciano was 12th at 3.20 meters.

The Rock's men were led by newcomer Tyler Kachelries, who reached the NCAA provisional standard in the javelin with a throw of 62.74 meters, good enough for second place in his first meet in a Rock uniform.

Alex Koksal also recorded a second place finish, recording a PSAC qualifying mark of 31:34.07 in the 10,000-meter run.

The Rock had three men reach the PSAC standard in the hammer throw. Billy Martin led the way with a 13th place finish and a toss of 47.79 meters. Nick Turk was 16th at 44.21 meters and Jerrod Galloway was 17th at 44.15 meters.

The final PSAC qualifier from The Rock men on Friday came from Logan Mooney with an eighth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.11 seconds.
