D'Asia Chambers scored 21 points and senior center
Jazmyne Frost added 20 tallies Saturday afternoon in a losing cause Saturday afternoon as Slippery Rock University's women's basketball team dropped an 85-67 decision to visiting California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action in Morrow Field House.
Frost also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Chambers snared six rebounds.
Sophomore point guard
Erica Aiello contributed 10 points for SRU, which saw its season records drop to 4-16 overall and 1-9 in PSAC West action.
Emma Mahady recorded game-high totals of 22 points and 15 rebounds and Irina Kukolj added 21 points and six rebounds for California (12-7, 6-4). CeCe Dixon chipped in 11 points and Miki Glenn scored 10 points for the Vulcans.
The Rock finished the game with a 44% (27 of 62) efficiency on its field-goal attempts with a 42% (5 of 12) on 3-point shots. SRU sank eight of 14 (57%) free throws.
California, which had a 50-32 rebounding advantage, shot 44% (37 of 72) from the field and 37% (7 of 19) from 3-point range with an 82% (14 of 17) showing from the foul line.
Neither team took good care of the basketball, as evidenced by a 20-19 turnover comparison that had The Rock on the higher end.
The Rock outscored their guests by a 40-8 margin in "bench" points, while The Rock had 40-32 and 18-14 advantages in points "in the the paint" and off turnovers, respectively.
SRU led for the first three-plus minutes of action but never thereafter.
The Rock found themselves down by a double-digit, 21-11, margin at the midway mark of the first half. California expanded its lead to as many as 14 points (29-15 with 8:00 left) before it took a nine-point, 41-32, lead into the intermission.
California led by 17 points (54-37) with 15:15 left to play before The Rock roared back to trim the deficit to six points, 63-57, with 7:45 remaining. A 16-4 Vulcans run in the next six minutes, though, gave the guests their largest lead of the game, an 18-point (79-61) with 1:30 left.
The Rock visit nationally-ranked Gannon University for a 5:30 p.m. game Wednesday at the Hammermill Center in Erie.
SRU returns home for a 1 p.m. game next Saturday vs. Pitt-Johnstown. That game will be part of The Rock's "National Women and Girls in Sports Day" event, as well as the women's basketball team's "Play 4 Kay" breast cancer awareness event.
