SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team begins its run to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at California (Pa.) in the opening round of the 2014 PSAC Tournament. The game is just the latest installment of what has become one of the top rivalries in the PSAC.

How They Got Here: Slippery Rock won three out of its final five games to end the season at 11-5-1 overall. SRU earned the fifth seed in the conference tournament after compiling a league record of 10-5-1.

California closed the season at 11-3-4 overall and 10-3-3 in the PSAC to claim the fourth seed, and the right to host a first round game. The Vulcans were 0-1-2 in their last three contests.

How They Compare: At the conclusion of the regular season, Slippery Rock holds advantages over California in goals scored (37-31), goals allowed (11-14), shutouts (10-7) and times shutout (4-5).

Home Away From Home: SRU has not lost at California since the 2011 season. Slippery Rock has been one of the few teams to have success on the Vulcans' home surface at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility. Since its opening in 2010, California is 49-4-6 at home and Slippery Rock has been responsible for three of the losses.

The Goalies: It took less than a full season as a starter for
Annabelle Hegeman to establish herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the PSAC. On the season, Hegeman leads the league with eight shutouts, while her 0.62 Goals Against Average is tied for the fifth lowest in the conference. Hegeman, who is 11-4-1 on the year, has saved 62 shots (.861).

Meghan Jayes has been the Vulcans' primary keeper this season and is 9-2-4 with six shutouts, 65 saves (.867) and a 0.62 GAA.

The Coaches: Noreen Herlihy is one of just 11 coaches in NCAA Division II women's soccer history to have won 250 games in her illustrious career. In 20 seasons at Slippery Rock, Herlihy has compiled a 250-109-30 record, made nine NCAA Tournament appearances and won three conference titles.

Glenn Francis is in his first season in charge of California's program after serving as the Vulcans' assistant coach last year. Prior to coming to California, Francis served as the head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan (2005-09) and Ashland (2010-12). Francis has a career record of 86-70-16.

Rock Record Book: Slippery Rock's 11 goals allowed is currently the lowest by a Rock team in school history, while its 2.18 goals scored per game is the seventh most.

Rock PSAC Tournament History: Slippery Rock has won three PSAC championships, the second-most of any conference school all-time and just one behind West Chester's four PSAC crowns.

Slippery Rock has qualified for the PSAC Tournament in 10 of the last 11 seasons and has appeared in the championship game four times, three of which resulted in wins.

Up Next: The winner of Tuesday's game will play the winner of the No. 1 East Stroudsburg and No. 8 Indiana (Pa.) first round match in the PSAC Tournament semifinals on Friday. The semifinals and the finals of the tournament will be held at the top remaining seed following the first round matches.
