CLARION, Pa. – Clarion University ran out to a 17-point lead at halftime and held off Slippery Rock University for an 89-73 win Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division women's basketball action.
The win improved the Golden Eagles to 8-11 overall and 2-7 in PSAC-West games and gave Clarion a season sweep over Slippery Rock. The Rock drop to 4-15 overall and 1-8 in divisional play.
Wednesday night's game marked the beginning of the second round of divisional play within the conference, leaving all teams with seven games remaining in the regular season.
For the second consecutive game, Slippery Rock rebounded at halftime and was able to outscore its opponent in the second half, but the deficit at the break proved to be too large to overcome.
Slippery Rock got a pair of double-double efforts from
Jazmyne Frost and
Megan Hardiman Wednesday night, led by Frost's big night down low with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
Hardiman put together arguably her best performance in a Rock uniform with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
D'Asia Chambers added another solid scoring night to lead the team with 19 points, while also grabbing six rebounds.
Aidan Geise finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-high four blocks and
Erica Aiello chipped in eight assists to lead the SRU performers.
Slippery Rock shot 38.9 percent from the field, connecting on 28-of-72 attempts, including 8-of-25 from beyond the 3-point arc (32.0 percent), and was 60.0 percent at the free throw line (9-of-15).
Two statistics that jump out in the final box score are the disparity in free throws and bench points. Clarion finished the game 21-of-31 from the free throw line and its bench outscored The Rock's bench by a 33-4 margin, with all four of those points coming from
Kara Houppert.
The Golden Eagles were led by a double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds from Kelly Johnson and a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds from Hannah Heeter. Emma Fickel added 18 points and Tania Holmes chipped in 12 points.
Clarion shot 46.2 percent from the field (30-of-65), 50.0 percent from 3-point (8-of-16) and 67.7 percent at the free throw line (21-of-31).
Slippery Rock led just once in early stages of the opening half before Clarion built a 17-point lead, 49-32 at halftime.
The Rock outscored the Golden Eagles 41-40 in the second half, but Clarion was able to answer any momentum swings to preserve the win.
Slippery Rock returns home Saturday to host California (Pa.) in a 1 p.m. game at Morrow Field House.
