GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team opened the 2013 season Saturday with a two-game split on day one of the Glenville State Tournament in Glenville, W.Va. The Rock began the day with a victory over West Virginia State before falling to Charleston in the nightcap.
After losing the opening set 23-25 to the Yellow Jackets, Slippery Rock won three consecutive sets 25-18, 25-23 and 25-10 to take the match 3-1. Caroline Houston led the way with 8 kills and 10 digs. Stephanie Solt tallied 9 kills while Janna Reilly recorded 13 assists.
In the second match, Slippery Rock dropped the first set to Charleston 21-25 before charging back to win the next set 25-21. The Golden Eagles responded by taking the next two sets 25-22 and 25-19 to record the 3-1 win. Lauren Rojek led The Rock with 9 kills and also tallied 2 assists, 2 service aces, 2 blocks and 6 digs. Kristen Smith added 8 kills while Houston, Michelle Hren and Kristy Lake added 7 kills apiece. Reilly recorded 22 assists and contributed 14 digs in the loss.
Slippery Rock returns to action in day two of the Glenville State Tournament against Glenville State at 10 a.m. and Bluefield State at 4 p.m. Sunday in Glenville, W.Va.
