ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (6-9, 1-1) split on day one of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover tournament in Erie, Pa. Friday.
The Rock fell 3-2 to Kutztown (8-5, 2-0) early this afternoon before sweeping East Stroudsburg (5-9, 1-2) 3-0 this evening.
Slippery Rock jumped out to an early lead against the Golden Bears in the opener, winning the first two sets 25-11 and 25-22. Kutztown answered with consecutive 25-17 and 25-19 wins of their own to send the match to the fifth set, where the Golden Bears outlasted The Rock 17-15 to record the win.
Kristy Lake led The Rock with 15 kills and
Caroline Houston added 14 kills of her own to go along with her team-leading 18 digs and three service aces.
Janna Reilly contributed 31 assists, while
Michelle Hren added 11 kills and 7 total blocks to cap the leaders for Slippery Rock.
In game two of the crossover, The Rock swept East Stroudsburg in three sets, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23.
Houston led the team with 10 kills and a .290 kill percentage.
Sarah Beals added eight kills and four blocks, while Hren contributed six kills.
Lauren Rojek had 22 digs and
Kayla Byler had four blocks to lead the defensive effort for Slippery Rock.
Alexandra Fleagle had 16 assists in the win.
Slippery Rock returns to action Saturday against West Chester (12:30 p.m.) and Cheyney (3:30 p.m.) in day two of the PSAC crossover.
