New/Sortable Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team dropped its final two games against West Liberty and Charleston in the Wheeling Jesuit Tournament Saturday.
West Liberty jumped out to an early lead, taking the first set 25-14. Slippery Rock stormed back to take the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-19. The host Hilltoppers answered in the fourth set, outlasting The Rock 25-22 before taking the fifth set 15-8 to seal the victory.
Caroline Houston led the team with 19 kills and a .400 attack percentage, also adding 15 digs.
Kristy Lake added 10 kills and 20 digs,
Michelle Hren added 8 kills and
Sarah Beals added 7 kills to lead the offensive effort for The Rock.
Hren tallied a career-high 12 total blocks to lead Slippery Rock's defensive effort, while
Kayla Woo added 14 digs.
Janna Reilly recorded 22 assists and
Alexandra Fleagle added 11 assists.
Charleston edged Slippery Rock 25-23 and 25-18 in the first two sets to take a commanding 2-0 lead to begin the nightcap. The Rock fought back to win the third set 25-19 and the fourth 25-18, but could not complete the comeback after the Golden Eagles outlasted them 18-16 in the final frame.
Houston led the offense with 19 kills, while Lake added 17 kills and
Jaden Zimmer chipped in 11 kills.
Lauren Rojek led the defense with 41 digs and Woo added 25 digs. Reilly contributed a season-high 55 assists, two shy of her career-high.
The losses drop Slippery Rock to 5-7 on the year, while West Liberty improves to 5-6 and Charleston improves to 8-3.
The Rock returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 24 in its final non-conference match on the road against Point Park University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
