Rock volleyball splits on day one of the Shepherd Tournament

SHEPERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team opened the Shepherd Tournament with a win over West Virginia Wesleyan, but fell to Fairmont State in the nightcap. With the split, The Rock moves to 4-2 on the season.

The Rock outlasted West Virginia Wesleyan in five sets for a hard-fought win in the opener. Slippery Rock took the first set 25-21 before the Bobcats scratched out wins in consecutive sets, 26-24 and 26-24. The Rock answered by winning the next set 25-13 and won 15-6 in the fifth set to seal the victory.

Caroline Houston led the way for The Rock with 14 kills, 12 digs and two blocks. Janna Reilly recorded a season-high 25 assists and 13 digs. Michelle Hren recorded seven blocks, one shy of her career high.

Fairmont State continued its hot start to the season by defeating The Rock in four sets. The Fighting Falcons jumped out to an early lead and took the first set 25-23. Slippery Rock would answer with a 25-23 victory in the second set, but fell in the remaining two sets 23-25 and 20-25.

Houston led Slippery Rock with 12 kills 14 digs and two service aces. Senior Kayla Woo added 17 digs, while freshman Jaden Zimmer recorded a career-high 7 blocks. Alexandra Fleagle added 11 assists, 10 digs and a season-high three service aces.

Slippery Rock returns to action Saturday against Shepherd University in day two of the Shepherd Tournament. The Rock is 8-3 all-time against the Rams, winning the last four matchups. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
