Rock swept by #11 California (Pa.)

No. 11 California (Pa.) recorded an 8-0, 2-0 sweep over Slippery Rock Tuesday in PSAC West action.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 11th-ranked California University (Pa.) softball team handed Slippery Rock University a pair of losses Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action at the SRU Softball Complex. The Vulcans claimed game one by an 8-0 margin in six innings and won game two 2-0.

California improved its season records to 21-1 overall and 5-1 in PSAC West games. Slippery Rock drops to 10-14 overall and 2-4 in divisional play.

Alex Sagl scattered just three hits to earn the opening game win on the mound for California. She finished with seven strikeouts to improve to 9-1 on the year.

Lindsay Reicoff belted three home runs and brought in five runs to lead the offense for the Vulcans.

The visitors plated one run in the first and second innings and broke the game open with a four-run third inning before ending the game early with two runs in the sixth.

Ashley Knight took the loss on the mound for Slippery Rock after throwing five innings and allowing six runs while striking out three batters. Amy Erickson pitched the sixth inning and allowed the final two runs.

Slippery Rock's hits came from Katie Kaiser, Alaynna Beers and Megan Maloney in the first game.

The Vulcans pitching dominance continued in game two as Hope Spancake and Sagl combined to allow just three hits. Spancake threw the first four innings and allowed two hits. Sagl earned the save after throwing the final three innings and allowing one hit.

Emily Lobdell took the loss on the mound for Slippery Rock in game two after throwing a complete game and allowing two earned runs on six hits. She registered four strikeouts.

The Vulcans loaded the bases on two occasions in the game and plated one run in the top of the third to take their first lead of the game. They added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 2-0 and Sagl shut down The Rock to seal the win.

Taylor Welch walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh and reached third base on a single from Maloney but Slippery Rock could not manage to bring the runners in as Sagl pitched out of the jam.

Lobdell and Katie Saluga each had one hit for Slippery Rock in the second game.

Maloney was the lone Slippery Rock player to record multiple hits on the day with one hit in each game.

Slippery Rock is back in action tomorrow when Edinboro visits the SRU Softball Complex for a 2:30 p.m. PSAC West doubleheader. The Rock will close a three-day homestand Thursday when PSAC Central opponent Clarion visits for a crossover doubleheader at 3 p.m.
