Rock splits with Gannon, Saluga ends home career with a three-run walk off

Slippery Rock split the final home doubleheader of the 2013 season against Gannon University. Katie Saluga wrapped her career at home with a three-run walk off homer to win game two.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split their final home doubleheader of the season against Gannon University Tuesday, falling 5-1 in the first game and walking off with a 10-8 win after a Katie Saluga three-run homer in game two.

Saluga ended game two with a three-run walk off home run that wrapped her career at the SRU Softball Complex. She led The Rock to a 10-8 victory going three for five at bat with four RBIs. Game two saw four home runs for SRU with one each from Saluga, Katie Kaiser, Jenna Geibel and Breanna Tongel.

Scoring efforts started in the bottom of the first for Slippery Rock when Kaiser and Geibel went back to back with home runs. Followed by a three up three down from Gannon, SRU scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gannon had three errors in the inning, Saluga and Geibel earned one RBI and Tongel batted in two.

With the score in favor of SRU at 6-0 entering the top of the third inning Gannon began to rally back. The Golden Knights scored three runs and made the score 6-3 before holding The Rock scoreless in the bottom of the third inning. Gannon continued scoring efforts and managed to tie the game 6-6 through the bottom of the fourth inning.

The tie remained until the bottom of the fifth when Tongel hit her fourth home run of the season. Slippery Rock held a 7-6 lead until the top of the seventh inning when Golden Knight Caitlyn Colucci hit a two run home run giving Gannon an 8-7 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Saluga stepped up to the plate with two outs and two on base. With one ball and no strikes, Saluga swung for the fences launching the ball over right-center field and won the game 10-8. Saluga rounded first throwing her helmet and closed an incredible career at the SRU Softball diamond. The winning homer was Saluga's ninth for the season.

Other key players in the game two victory were Alaynna Beers who was three for four at bat and Lindsey Kelenske who was two for three at the plate.

Emily Lobdell is credited with the victory on the mound pitching all seven innings and earning three strikeouts. Lobdell improved her record to 6-5.

Game one ended in favor of Gannon with a final score of 5-1. Slippery Rock wasn't able to bring the bats to life going just 4-24 as a team.

Gannon jumped to a 3-0 lead through the bottom of the third. Slippery Rock scored when Lobdell drilled a double earning the only RBI of the game from Beers.

The score was 3-1 until the top of the fourth when Gannon managed to score the final two runs of the game. Slippery Rock was unable to rally and the game ended 5-1.

Ashley Knight is credited with the loss of game one and now has a record of 10-12.

Slippery Rock now stands in second place in PSAC West play and will travel to Ursuline College on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
