SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a doubleheader vs. Edinboro University in the second and final meeting of the season.
The Rock now has an overall record of 15-17 and a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division record of 5-7. The Fighting Scots record improves to 8-19 and the team is 5-7 in PSAC-West play.
Slippery Rock started the day off strong scoring at least two runs in every inning except the top of the fifth in game one. The Rock handed Edinboro an 11-1 defeat.
SRU was 18 for 39 at the plate, led by
Katie Kaiser and
Katie Saluga who were both four-for-five at bat. Kaiser led the team with four RBIs, while Saluga and
Breanna Tongel each added two RBIs.
Jenna Geibel and
Ashley Samluk both contributed one RBI.
Scoring for The Rock started in the first inning with two outs when Kaiser doubled to left center, setting herself in scoring position for Geibel. Geibel then doubled down the right field line, earning her RBI. The final run in the top of the first came when Tongel singled up the middle, scoring Geibel.
The Rock continued to hold Edinboro scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Victoria Filbert scored an unearned run that would be the only run of the game for the Fighting Scots.
Ashley Knight earns the win on the mound for SRU and improves her pitching record to 10-11. Knight allowed five hits from 21 batters and had four strikeouts.
Slippery Rock was unable to continue it's hitting streak in the 4-2 loss in game two, going just seven for 27 at the plate. Tongel hit a home run and was one-for-two at the plate. Saluga and Kaiser were both two-for-four.
SRU was unable to score a run until the top of the fourth inning when Tongel hit her fourth home run of the season with two outs. She tied the game 1-1.
The Fighting Scots answered back with their final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs. All three runs were unearned due to fielding errors from Slippery Rock.
The final run of the game came from Slippery Rock in the top of the sixth inning when Kaiser scored on a throwing error.
Emily Lobdell had six strikeouts and faced 25 batters. She is credited with the loss on the mound and now has a record of 5-5.
The Rock will take on Gannon University tomorrow at the SRU Softball complex. The doubleheader is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
