ERIE, Pa. – Slippery Rock University split a day of doubleheaders at Mercyhurst University. After a 3-1 loss in the first game, SRU handed the Lakers an 8-2 defeat.
Slippery Rock is now 11-15 overall and 3-5 in PSAC West play. Mercyhurst's overall record is 13-21 and the team is now 2-6 in the conference.
The Rock got off to a slow start in game one with Mercyhurst taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Kristen Fyffe hit a home run for the Lakers. SRU was unable to answer in the top of the third but managed to hold Mercyhurst scoreless to end the third inning.
Slippery Rock's only run of the game came in the top of the fourth when
Breanna Tongel made contact to score
Katie Kaiser.
The score remained 1-1 through the bottom of the fifth inning when Mercyhurst scored the final two runs of the game. The first run came from a single to left field from Megan Smith that scored Courtney Smith. The Lakers continued to connect at the plate, but the final run was scored with bases loaded and a walk for Rebecca Malaga.
Slippery Rock was unable to answer back in game one.
Ashley Knight is credited with the loss.
Game two saw a lot more action from The Rock with eight hits and eight runs scored. SRU started off strong scoring two runs in the first inning. With two outs and Kaiser on second base
Jenna Geibel stepped up to the plate and nailed a two-run home run.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the third inning when Mercyhurst managed to tie the game. Megan Smith doubled to left field with two outs earning two RBIs for the Lakers. The Rock managed to earn the final out catching Shaina Bunker at home plate.
The Rock did not allow the tie to last for long, as the bats came to life in the top of the fourth. SRU scored five runs starting with a home run from Tongel. Regan Cotrill and
Taylor Welch both advanced on a single from
Emily Lobdell, followed by a grand slam from
Katie Saluga before Mercyhurst was able to end the inning.
The Lakers were unable to make a comeback and Slippery Rock scored their final run in the top of the seventh inning.
Knight is credited with the win for The Rock improving her record to 8-10. Lobdell pitched four innings and earned three strikeouts in the game two win.
Saluga was two for four at bat with four RBIs, her grand slam was her seventh home run of the season. Geibel's home run was her fifth of the season and she now has 22 RBIs. Tongel's home run was her second of the season.
Slippery Rock will head to Edinboro University April 16 for a doubleheader set to start at 2:30 p.m.
