Rock swept by Gannon in first PSAC-West doubleheader

Slippery Rock fell 6-2 and 7-2 in the Gannon doubleheader in Erie, Pa.

ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University softball team went 0-2 against the Gannon University Golden Knights. Slippery Rock is 6-10 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West for the 2013 season. Gannon advances to 15-2 overall and 2-0 in PSAC West play.

Game one started slow with no runs scored until the top of the fourth inning, when Jenna Geibel ripped a homerun to center field with two outs and no runners on base. Unfortunately for The Rock the 1-0 lead didn't last long, Gannon answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

With Emily Lobdell on the mound for SRU and a runner on first and third base, Golden Knight Kirstie Cortazzo hit a homerun to left field. Gannon managed two more runs on two outs when Ashley Knight relieved Lobdell on the mound. Knight allowed one hit before striking out Caitlyn Colucci to end the inning.

The score was 6-1 Gannon, when The Rock took their final at bat in the top of the seventh inning. Lobdell started things off for SRU with a single to the short stop. She advanced to second on a single from Katie Kaiser. Alaynna Beers was then walked, loading the bases for Slippery Rock. With two outs Lobdell scored for The Rock on a passed ball, which was quickly followed by the final out of the game.

Jenna Geibel went two for three at bat with one run and one RBI for The Rock.

The final score of game one was 6-2. Emily Lobdell is credited with the loss for Slippery Rock and now has a 2-2 record on the mound.

At the start of game two Gannon managed three quick outs against The Rock and took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. With Ashley Knight on the mound, the Golden Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the first with two sacrifice bunts that set up the first run of the game. Alyssa Bates then singled up the middle earning two RBIs. The inning ended with the score 3-0 GU.

Gannon scored another run in the bottom of the second after Slippery Rock was unable to answer at the plate. Samantha Scott hit a homerun for the Golden Knights making the score 4-0.

Taylor Welch scored for SRU off of a sacrifice fly from Emily Lobdell putting The Rock on the board in the top of the third inning.

Solid defensive plays in the bottom of the third made for the first scoreless inning for the Golden Knights. Slippery Rock was unable to turn the game in their favor with a quick three outs at bat in the top of the fourth.

SRU scored its final run in the top of the fifth making the score 5-2 Gannon.

Amy Erickson relieved Knight at the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gannon University scored two runs before a ground out to Erickson to wrap up the inning.

Slippery Rock was unable to make anything happen in the top of the seventh ending the game 7-2.

Ashley Knight is credited for the loss at the mound for The Rock and now has a record of 4-7.

Taylor Welch led game two offensive efforts going two for three at bat and scoring two runs.\
