Rock drops 9-3 decisions to IUP, NYIT

Tuesday's losses dropped SRU's season record to 3-5

CLERMONT, FLA. – Slippery Rock University softball team took another day of losses against Indiana University of Pennsylvania and New York Institute of Technology. With both games ending 9-3, The Rock will take a day off before continuing spring break play.

In game one Slippery Rock faced PSAC Central Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Rock finished the top of the first with one run when Katie Saluga tagged up on a sacrifice fly from Jenna Geibel.

Ashley Knight took the mound for The Rock where she saw the entire batting line-up and allowed seven runs.  Knight managed to rebound from that inning and only allow two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Knight is credited with the loss and now has a record of 2-3.

In the top of the second inning Megan Maloney and Taylor Welch scored off of a double to left field from Saluga, who led the team with two RBIs.

Slippery Rock was unable to rally back and ended the game 9-3. Indiana (Pa.) now has an overall record of 5-4.

Following the IUP game The Rock took on the New York Institute of Technology. Slippery Rock took the lead in the bottom of the first 2-0, with Jenna Geibel batting in Saluga off of a single followed by Katie Kaiser scoring off of a single from Breanna Tongel.

NYIT scored every inning starting in the top of the third, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Slippery Rock earned their last run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Tongel hit a triple to right field allowing Alaynna Beers to rip a single up the middle and earn the final RBI.

Amy Erickson is credited with the loss of game two and is now 0-1. NYIT now has a 5-4 overall record for the season.

Tongel went two for three at the plate with one run and one RBI. Tongel now has seven RBIs for the season and has a batting average of .304. Saluga is leading the team with an average of .485, she has 33 at bats for 16 hits and six RBIs.

Freshman Katie Kaiser trails Saluga with a .423 average with 26 at bats for eleven hits and four RBIs. Knight leads the pitchers with 31.2 innings pitched and 36 strike outs.

Slippery Rock now has an overall record of 4-4 and will continue spring break play on Thursday when they take on the New York Institute of Technology for the second time and the University of Minnesota Duluth for the third time.
