Rock sweeps Queens in Florida

Slippery Rock defeated Queens College 5-4 in eight innings in game one and 7-0 in game two Sunday to open the spring break trip.

CLERMONT, FLA. – The Slippery Rock University softball team kicked off spring break with two victories Sunday in the Florida sunshine. After a 5-4 extra innings win in game one, The Rock came back strong with a 7-0 victory in game two, leaving Queens College winless in the first day of play.

With the sweep, Slippery Rock improves to 3-1 overall this spring, while Queens drops to 2-6.

Ashley Knight was credited with both wins after recording 15 strikeouts. Pitching efforts from Emily Lobdell and Amy Erickson also helped lead The Rock in game one.

Slippery Rock will enter day two of spring break play Saturday, when it will  face the University of Minnesota Duluth in a doubleheader.

Jenna Geibel ripped a three-run home run to give The Rock an early 3-1 lead in game one. Queens managed to tie the game 4-4 in the seventh inning, sending the game to an International tie breaker. With the bases loaded for Queens in the eighth inning, Knight managed to strike out the last batter to end the top half of the inning.

Taylor Welch was placed on second base in the bottom half of the inning with the tie breaker rules. Megan Maloney hit a single to advance Welch to third and Katie Saluga ripped a single up the middle to bring in Welch and win the game for Slippery Rock.

Saluga ended game one with three hits and one RBI. Maloney had two hits and three stolen bases and Katie Kaiser finished game one with two hits and one stolen base. 

Isabelle Yaroch took the first loss for Queens College after throwing all eight innings and allowing six hits and eight walks.

After a long first game, Slippery Rock took the field for game two with Knight back on the mound. Knight finished the game with ten strikeouts and led The Rock to a 7-0 victory.

Saluga and Breanna Tongel led the team with a single and two doubles each. Tongel and Geibel finished with two RBIs and Alaynna Beers had two singles and one RBI for The Rock.

Nicole Turato took the loss for Queens in game two.

Slippery Rock will face the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 9 a.m. and again at 11 a.m.
