SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Christa Wodarczyk scored a career-high 19 points but visiting Clarion University rode the momentum of a 10-0 run late in the game to a 74-68 win over Slippery Rock University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Morrow Field House.
Slippery Rock (4-12, 3-13 PSAC) led by five points midway through the second period and maintained a two-point advantage, 56-54, with 7:11 to play before Clarion (11-11, 7-9 PSAC) put together a 10-0 run to take a 64-56 lead with 3:11 to play.
The Rock would cut the deficit to five points with 2:51 to play but could get no closer as the visitors held on for the win.
Wodarczyk led all scorers in the game with her career night that included a perfect 5-for-5 effort from beyond the 3-point line. She finished the night shooting 7-of-9 from the field for 19 points and also grabbed five rebounds.
Erinne Cunningham scored 13 points and handed out six assists and
Erica Aiello added seven points and a career-high 12 assists to pace The Rock's top performers.
Slippery Rock finished the game with 13 3-pointers, the most for the team in a game since the season-opener (14) against Urbana. The Rock shot 39.1 percent from the field (27-of-69), 36.1 percent from long range (13-of-36) and hit a season-low one free throw on seven attempts (14.3 percent).
Clarion was led by the double-double effort of 15 points and 14 rebounds from Hannah Heeter, who leads the PSAC in rebounding and is the only player in the league to average a double-double. Emma Fickel added 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Tania Holmes added 14 points for the Golden Eagles.
Clarion shot 40 percent from the field (28-of-70), 36.8 percent from beyond the 3-point line (7-of-19) and 78.6 percent at the free throw line (11-of-14). The Golden Eagles posted a 45-41 advantage in total rebounds and were plus-five in turnover margin.
Slippery Rock scored the first points of the game and opened up an 18-10 lead with 12:55 to play in the opening period. Clarion responded with a 14-0 run to take a 24-18 lead with 8:43 to play before the intermission, a lead they would maintain the rest of the period. Slippery Rock netted the last four points of the half to go into the break trailing 34-32.
Clarion pushed its lead back out to eight points, 43-35, with 15:11 to play before Slippery Rock answered with a 17-4 run to take a 52-47 lead with 10:28 to play. The Golden Eagles rallied back to tie the game on two occasions and Heeter's jumper with 7:01 to play sparked the 10-0 run that would put the game out of reach.
Slippery Rock has six games remaining on the regular season schedule, with three at home and three on the road. The Rock will travel to Mercyhurst Saturday for a 1 p.m. game before hosting Lock Haven and Edinboro next week.
