SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team put a scare into No. 21 Edinboro University Saturday afternoon but the Fighting Scots used their size and depth to pull away in the second half for a 70-60 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Morrow Field House.
Slippery Rock had Edinboro on its heels for much of the first half and took a 34-32 lead into the break. The Fighting Scots used an 8-0 run early in the second half to force some separation and never looked back.
Edinboro improves to 18-5 overall and 15-4 in PSAC games, while Slippery Rock drops to 4-19 overall and 3-16 in league games.
Saturday's game was the tale of two halves for Slippery Rock, which connected on 15 field goals in the first half and shot 44.1 percent, but hit just nine in the second half and shot 28.1 percent. The Rock finished the game shooting 36.4 percent from the field (24-of-66), 25 percent from beyond the 3-point line (3-of-12) and 60 percent at the free throw line (9-of-15).
D'Asia Chambers was the top scorer for SRU with 12 points.
Erinne Cunningham scored in double figures for the 10th time in the last 12 games and finished with 11 points.
Alexas Brown added nine points and six rebounds and
Christa Wodarczyk chipped in eight points.
Edinboro placed four players in double figures led by a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds from Samantha Blazetic. Darche' Jackson added a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists, Kiara Brown scored 15 points and Aignee Freeland added 12 points.
The Fighting Scots shot 40.8 percent from the field (29-of-71), 13.3 percent from long range (2-of-15) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (10-of-12).
The game saw seven ties in the opening half as neither team could build more than a five point advantage. Slippery Rock trailed 30-25 with 3:25 to play but closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 34-32 lead into the break.
The teams traded baskets to open the second half until the score was tied at 41-41, the tenth tie of the game, with 14:25 to play. From there, Edinboro used a 8-0 run to make it 49-41 with 12:18 to play, a deficit The Rock would never recover from.
The lead grew to a game-high 16 at 68-52 with 2:05 to play before Slippery Rock rallied back, but could get no closer than eight in the final minute.
The Rock will play three more games this season with two on the road and one at home. The team will visit California Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Indiana next Saturday for Senior Day and closing the season the following Wednesday at Gannon.
