Frost leads Rock women past Cheyney, 77-66

Senior center Jazmyne Frost scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead The Rock to victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action in suburban Philadelphia. Erica Aiello and Aiden Geise each added 14 points for SRU (2-9)

CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team headed into its holiday break on a winning note as the Green and White scored a 77-66 victory Saturday afternoon over hosting Cheyney University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action.

The win was SRU's second of the season, snapped a string of four consecutive losses and improved The Rock's record to 2-9.

Cheyney sustained its third consecutive loss and saw its season record fall to 1-9.

Senior center Jazymyne Frost paced the winning effort with game-high totals of 29 points and eight rebounds. Frost made nine of 15 shots from the floor and 11 of 15 free throws en route to a season-high point total and her fourth game with 20 or more points this winter. Frost scored 19 of her points in the final half of action.

Sophomore guards Erica Aiello and Aidan Geise each hit four of six shots from 3-point range and finished with 14 points to complement Frost's performance. Aiello also handed out four assists, grabbed four rebounds and recorded three steals, while Geise had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior forward Danielle Garroutte came off the bench to record seven points and seven rebounds for The Rock, who are idle until Jan. 3 when they visit Millersville for the fourth game in this year's six-game crossover series.

Lachelle Miller scored a team-high 18 points for Cheyney, while Kia Whitley-Duncan added 13 points and five assists and Amber Genwright had 10 points.

The Rock finished the game with a respectable 43% (25 of 58) efficiency on their field-goal attempts with a 37% (10 of 27) showing from 3-point range. SRU made 17 of 24 (71%) of its free throws and had a 43-30 rebounding advantage, but were on the high side of a 23-18 turnover comparison.

Cheyney also shot 43% (23 of 54) from the field. The Wolves made seven of 17 (41%) shots from long range and 13 of 21 (62%) free throws.

The Rock jumped out to a 10-0 lead after five minutes of action, only to see Cheyney roar back with a 21-10 run and take its first lead of the game, 21-20, with just less than six minutes left in the first half.

Aiello buried long-range bombs on back-to-back Rock possessions to give the guests a 26-21 lead, but again Cheyney came back to pull even at 26-26 with 2:15 left before the intermission.

SRU scored nine of the final 13 first-half points to take a 35-30 lead into halftime and never trailed in the final 20 minutes of action.

The largest Rock lead of the game was a 14-point, 70-56, advantage with just less than five minutes left to play. The Rock lead was never less than three points in the final half of action.
