Rock visits Cheyney Saturday

Slippery Rock (1-9) visits Cheyney (1-8) Saturday for a 1 p.m. PSAC crossover game.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team will play its final game of the 2013 calendar year Saturday when it travels to Cheyney University for a 1 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game that will not count in the league standings.

Records: Slippery Rock enters Saturday's game with a 1-9 overall record and a 0-4 mark in the PSAC-West. The Rock is riding a four-game losing streak that includes a 3-point loss to No. 2 Gannon and double overtime losses to Pitt-Johnstown and East Stroudsburg.

Cheyney owns a 1-8 overall record and a 1-3 mark in the PSAC-East. The Wolves are riding a two-game losing streak with losses to Seton Hill and California (Pa.). Their lone win was over Mansfield, Dec. 7.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is scoring 70.3 points per game and allowing 80.0 points per game.

The Rock is shooting 42.2 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 64.7 percent at the free throw line.

Opponents shoot 39.5 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from long range and 74.2 percent at the free throw line.

Jazmyne Frost leads the team with per game averages of 16.2 points and 8.5 rebounds. D'Asia Chambers, the PSAC-West Athlete of the Week in each of the last two weeks, is averaging 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Aidan Geise has added 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while Erica Aiello chips in 8.8 points and 3.6 assists per game. Megan Hardiman caps the top scorers at 7.4 points per game.

Scouting the Wolves: Cheyney is scoring 51.3 points per game and allowing 74.2 points.

The team is shooting 36.7 percent from the field, 25.6 percent from 3-point and 61.0 percent from the free throw line.

Opponents are shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 33.1 percent from long range and 65.9 percent at the free throw line.

Kyra Hines-Allen leads the team with per game averages of 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and is the only player that averages double figures in scoring. Amber Genwright scores 9.9 points per game. Faye Dunston adds 7.0 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and Kiana Jackson chips in 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Kia Whitley-Duncan scores 5.2 points per game and leads the team at 4.0 assists per game.

Series: Slippery Rock owns a 12-10 advantage in the all-time series, including a 50-41 win last season at SRU.

Last Meeting: (Box Score) Slippery Rock's smothering defense helped fight off a poor shooting night as The Rock held on to beat Cheyney 50-41 last season. The Wolves made just 13 field goals and shot 23.2 percent in the game.

Erinne Cunningham led SRU with 14 points and Alexas Brown added 11 points. Emilee Vitez capped the top performers with 11 rebounds for The Rock.

Cheyney was led by 11 points from Tamara Russell and eight points and nine rebounds from Lachelle Miller.

Head Coaches: Tanya Longo is in her fourth season as the head coach of the Slippery Rock program, where she owns a record of 14-73. She is the eighth head coach in the program's history. Longo was inducted into the athletic Hall of Fame this year at her Alma Mater, Wisconsin Eau Claire, in honor of her excellent collegiate playing career. She is married to Rock football offensive coordinator Phil Longo.

Kyle Adams is in his first season as the head coach at Cheyney after serving the previous two seasons as an assistant coach. Adams owns a 1-8 record so far in his head coaching debut. He is in his second stint at Cheyney after serving as an assistant with the men's team in 1999.

Next Up: Slippery Rock will travel for the next two PSAC crossover games, opening 2014 with trips to Millersville Jan. 3 for a 1 p.m. game and Shippensburg Jan. 4 for a 1 p.m. game. The Rock returns home to host Kutztown Jan. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
