SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – For the third time in as many games, the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team came oh-so-close to recording its second win of the season Tuesday night.
But, in the end, the frustrations continued for the Green and White.
For the second time in as many games, The Rock (1-8) dropped a double-overtime decision, this time falling by a 70-68 score to visiting East Stroudsburg University (5-4) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action in Morrow Field House.
Adding to the hosts' frustration was the fact they had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of the regulation and first-overtime periods.
An off-balance shot from the right baseline came up short at the end of regulation play and sent the teams into the first extra stanza deadlocked at 55.
A potential game-winning free throw by senior center
Jazmyne Frost rolled around and rim and fell harmlessly outside the cylinder with 2.9 seconds left in the first overtime, sending the teams into the second overtime knotted at 61.
Undaunted, The Rock then led for the first four and a half minutes of the second OT.
But all hopes for victory ultimately evaporated with 2:45 left when Frost picked up her fifth and final personal foul, becoming the third Rock starter to be disqualified from the game.
The Rock, who held a 68-63 lead when Frost left the game, did not score a point in her absence.
Frost, who recorded a 14-point, 14-rebound "double-double," was one of four Rock players who finished the game with double-digit scoring totals.
Sophomore forward
Aidan Geise also recorded a "double-double" with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Megan Hardiman added 14 points before she left the game in the second overtime period due to an injury and junior forward
D'Asia Chambers scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds before fouling out with 29 seconds left in regulation time.
Rock starting point guard
Erica Aiello also fouled out after scoring six points in 27 minutes of playing time.
Jessica Martin had a 14-point, 12-rebound "double-double" off the bench for East Stroudsburg, while Kelsey Murray and Tyeca Reviere scored 10 points each.
The Rock finished the game with a 38% (22 of 58) efficiency on its field-goal attempts with a 35% (6 of 17) showing from 3-point range. SRU made 18 of 28 (64%) free throws.
East Stroudsburg, meanwhile, hit 33% (24 of 73) of its field-goal attempts and an ice-cold 13% (2 of 15) of its long-range shots. The Warriors made 20 of 30 (67%) free throws.
SRU had a 51-46 rebounding advantage but had almost twice as many turnovers as they were on the high end of a 27-15 miscue matchup.
The Rock held a 25-21 lead at the intermission.
SRU, which took second-ranked Gannon to the limit before falling in the back-to-back, double-OT games, returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it will host West Chester in another PSAC crossover game in Morrow Field House.
