CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (10-22, 5-14) fell in straight sets at California (Pa.)(25-5, 18-1) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Friday night.
The Rock got off to a strong start in the opening set, charging into an 11-7 lead over the top team in the PSAC-West. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Vulcans embarked on an 18-3 run to record a 25-14 opening set victory.
Leading the match 1-0, California jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, notching a 25-11 victory to take a 2-0 advantage in the contest.
Facing defeat, The Rock came out strong in the final frame to take an early 7-5 lead. The teams went back-and-forth before the Vulcans pulled away late to win the set 25-18 and take the match, 3-0.
Caroline Houston led The Rock's attack with nine kills, followed by
Kristy Lake with seven kills.
Janna Reilly tallied 12 assists and
Lauren Rojek led the defensive effort with a game-high 19 digs.
Molly Delaney and Mary Lavery each recorded 12 kills to pace the Vulcans' attack. California registered nine service aces in the shutout victory.
Slippery Rock returns to PSAC-West action Saturday at Seton Hill University. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
