SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A late breakaway that looked like a sure goal slipped outside the post for the 15th ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team in the final minutes as Gannon University held on for a 1-0 upset in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference quarterfinals Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 with five minutes to play, Slippery Rock broke free with a two-on-none breakaway. The Gannon keeper came out to play the ball and missed, leaving a wide open net, but The Rock's Andrea Felix couldn't get a solid foot on the ball and her sliding shot just rolled by the outside post.

That would be the best and final scoring chance defending conference champion and No. 2 seed Slippery Rock would get as No. 7 Gannon held on for the upset.

The Golden Knights (10-7-1) advance to the PSAC semifinals Friday against West Chester. The win is the first for Gannon in the PSAC playoffs since joining the conference.

The loss snaps a nine-game unbeaten streak and knocks Slippery Rock (13-3-2) out of the PSAC playoffs. Two of The Rock's three losses this season came at the hands of Gannon.

Slippery Rock entered the week as the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Region and is very likely to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament, which will begin Nov. 15. The NCAA Selection Committee will announce the field in a live webcast at www.NCAA.com at 7:30 p.m. Monday night, Nov. 11.

Gannon got its goal in the 29th minute when Amanda Gallant scored a rebound into an empty net after Kaitlyn Kissell's header was saved by a diving Dana O'Neill.

After the goal, the Golden Knights put nine players behind the ball for most of the rest of the way, denying Slippery Rock any solid chances.

The Rock finished the game with just three shots and none on target, season lows in both categories.

Gannon posted advantages of 9-3 in total shots, 4-0 in shots on goal and 5-1 in corner kicks.

O'Neill made three saves, including two full extension diving stops, in goal for Slippery Rock.

Sarah Geffel earned the win but was not forced to make a save for Gannon.

Slippery Rock will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show Monday night to learn its fate for the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The top six seeds in the region will earn a berth in the tournament with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds hosting rounds one and two. The No. 3 and No. 6 seed will travel to the No. 2 seed and the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds will travel to the No. 1 seed.

Slippery Rock has been the No. 1 seed in each Atlantic Region poll released by the NCAA so far this year.
