No. 14 Rock women open PSAC title defense Tuesday at home

Defending conference champion and 14th-ranked Slippery Rock welcomes Gannon to Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Tuesday for a PSAC quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host Gannon University Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference quarterfinal at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Tickets: All students from PSAC institutions will be admitted free with a valid student ID. The PSAC mandates the prices for adults at $7 and for students of non-PSAC institutions at $2. All tickets can be purchased at the gate.

PSAC Playoffs: Slippery Rock is the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and hosts No. 7 seed Gannon. The Rock was the only team in the PSAC to defeat No. 1 seed California this season. California will host No. 8 Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals. Kutztown earned the No. 3 seed and hosts No. 6 West Chester Tuesday and No. 4 Edinboro hosts No. 5 Shippensburg. The semifinals and finals will be played Friday and Saturday at the highest remaining seed after Tuesday's games.

National Rankings: Slippery Rock moved up one place to No. 14 in last week's national rankings. The Rock has been ranked in eight of the nine weekly polls produced by the NSCAA this year. Gannon was unranked in last week's poll. This week's rankings, which will be the final regular season rankings for the year, will be released Tuesday before kickoff.

Regional Rankings: Slippery Rock remained No. 1 in the official Atlantic Region rankings released last week by the NCAA. Gannon was ranked No. 4 in those rankings. Since then, The Rock went on the road to No. 3 Shippensburg and tied 1-1, while Gannon lost 3-2 in overtime to a Mansfield team that finished with a 5-11-1 overall record. This week's rankings will be announced Wednesday and the final rankings and NCAA selections will be announced Sunday night.

Records: Slippery Rock enters the playoffs with an overall record of 13-2-2 and a PSAC mark of 12-2-2. The Rock is riding a nine-game unbeaten streak (8 wins, 1 tie) in which it has outscored opponents 22-3.

Gannon finished the regular season with a 9-7-1 overall record and a 9-6-1 record in PSAC games. The Golden Knights are riding a two-game losing streak with losses to Kutztown and Mansfield and have lost four of their last five games.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 35-9 and outshooting the opposition 240-125.

Freshman Andrea Felix leads the team and ranks fifth in the PSAC with 10 goals and also has five assists, while fellow freshman Dara Demich has added nine goals and one assist and Nicole Krueger has four goals and one assist.

Allison Harbart, Crysta Ganter and Cailin Conner each have two goals and three assists, Ali Borsky has two goals and two assists and Lauren Impey has one goal and four assists to cap the top scorers.

The Rock's back four of Impey, Izabel Scott, Marissa Scullin and Lynn Neef has allowed just 53 shots on goal in 17 games.

Dana O'Neill has started 14 games in goal for SRU and is 10-2-1 with a 0.58 goals against average and a .800 save percentage. Annabelle Hegeman has played in give games and is 3-0-1 with a 0.26 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.

Rock in the Playoffs: Slippery Rock is the defending PSAC champion and is making its fourth straight and 11th overall trip to the league playoffs. The Rock has won the title three times (2012, 2005, 2003) and has made it to at least the semifinals in each of the last three years.

Scouting the Golden Knights: Gannon is outscoring opponents 29-24 and is outsooting the opposition 250-227.

The Golden Knights are led by PSAC leading scorer Mani Brueckner with 10 goals and 13 assists. She is one of only two players on the roster with double figure point totals, including Michelle Genetin with five goals and one assist.

Justine Rodrigues has three goals and two assists, Britney Barry has two goals and three assists and Kaitlyn Kissell has three goals to cap the top scorers.

Gannon has allowed 108 shots on goal in 17 games and owns a team goals against average of 1.39.

Sarah Geffel has started all 17 games in goal and is 9-7-1 with a 1.35 goals against average and a .779 save percentage.

Gannon in the Playoffs: Gannon has reached the PSAC playoffs in each of the last two years and has made the playoffs four times since joining the league. The Golden Knights have never advanced from the quarterfinal round. The closest they came to reaching the semifinals was last year, when East Stroudsburg advanced via a 5-4 edge in a penalty kick shootout. SRU then defeated ESU 3-0 in the semifinals.

Series: Slippery Rock owns a 9-8 edge in the all-time series, but Gannon holds the last win with a 2-1 victory earlier this fall.

Last Meeting: (Box Score) Slippery Rock posted advantages of 15-9 in shots and 11-4 in corner kicks, but a late goal led Gannon to a 2-1 win over SRU earlier this fall in Erie when The Rock was ranked No. 11 and Gannon was ranked No. 25.

That loss Oct. 2 was the last loss Slippery Rock has suffered.

Mani Brueckner scored in the 61st minute to put Gannon up 1-0 before Cailin Conner tied the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute.

Anna Colaizzo scored the game winner in traffic off a corner kick in the 76th minute.

Both teams managed only three shots on target in the game.

Head Coaches: Noreen Herlihy, the reigning PSAC and Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, is in her 19th season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. She has led the team to 18 consecutive winning seasons and owns a career record of 237-105-29. The 18 straight winning seasons include 16 consecutive with at least 10 wins and ranks as the eighth-best streak in Division II history.

Colin Petersen is in his 12th season as the head coach at Gannon, where he has led the team to a total of 90 wins, which ranks as the most for any women's coach in Gannon's program history. He has led the team to a winning record in five of the last six seasons.

Up Next: The winner will advance to the PSAC semifinals Friday at the highest remaining seed, where it will face the winner of the Kutztown and West Chester match.
