Vulcans pull away late for 79-52 win

California closed the game on a 23-5 run to hand Slippery Rock a 79-52 loss in PSAC-West action Saturday.

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The California University women's basketball team used a 23-5 run over the final 10:23 to hand Slippery Rock University a 79-52 loss in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Saturday afternoon.

The Rock (0-5, 0-2 PSAC) trailed by nine points and halftime and trailed 56-47 with 10:23 to play before going cold and scoring just five points the rest of the way as the Vulcans (1-4, 1-1 PSAC) pulled away.

California held Slippery Rock to a season-low 19 points in the second half and a season low four total assists in the game.

The Rock was led by a double-double effort from D'Asia Chambers, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Aidan Geise added 11 points and six rebounds and Jazmyne Frost was held to eight points and four rebounds.

Erica Aiello and Rebecca Olkosky each chipped in six points to cap the top scorers.

SRU shot 48.1 percent from the field in the first half, but just 23.1 percent in the second half to finish with a 35.8 percent efficiency for the game (19-of-53). The Rock was 27.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (5-of-18) and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line.

California managed a 48-39 advantage in total rebounds and shot 36.7 percent from the field (29-of-79), 35 percent from 3-point (7-of-20) and 82.4 percent from the free throw line (14-of-17).

The Vulcans got 38 points from their bench, while Slippery Rock got all its scoring from the starters with the exception of nine points. California forced 26 turnovers and turned those into 32 points, while SRU caused nine turnovers and scored five points off the takeaways.

California used steady runs in each half to pull away. The Vulcans led 18-15 midway through the first period before pushing that margin out to 15 points, 38-23, with 3:12 to play before the break.

Slippery Rock fought back at the end of the half to get the deficit to single digits at 42-33.

The Rock got to within six points early in the second half, 44-38, before California pushed the lead out to double figures and Slippery Rock went cold.

Slippery Rock will have a week off before traveling to Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio Nov. 30 for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
