SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team erased a 19-point deficit and retook the lead in the second half, but Clarion University closed the game on a 20-7 run to earn a 95-80 win over The Rock in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener for both teams Wednesday at Morrow Field House.
Slippery Rock was paced by a double-double effort from
Jazmyne Frost, who increased her impressive season averages with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Aidan Geise added a career-high 18 points, knocked down five 3-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome Clarion down the stretch.
The Rock sees their season records drop to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in PSAC-West play, while Clarion improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in divisional action.
Erica Aiello added 13 points and five assists and
Kara Houppert recorded her first double figure scoring performance with 10 points to cap the top scorers for The Rock.
Clarion placed five players in double figures, led by 19 points off the bench from Kelly Johnson. Emma Fickel finished with 18 poionts, Tania Holmes added 14 points, Jasmine Boyd chipped in 13 points and Raven Jones finished with 10 points.
The Golden Eagles posted advantages of 36-26 in points in the paint, 27-14 in points off turnovers and 34-15 in bench points. Both teams pulled down 38 total rebounds.
Slippery Rock started the game slowly and trailed by double figures midway through the first half, but got hot in the early stages of the second half to battle back into the game.
The Rock finished the game with a season-high 80 points and shot 43.5 percent from the field (27-of-62), 50.0 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (10-of-20) and 84.2 percent from the free throw line (16-of-19). All three percentages ended up being season highs for SRU.
Clarion shot 44.3 percent from the field (31-of-70), 38.1 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 73.5 percent at the free throw line (25-of-34).
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 33-14 lead with 6:26 to play in the first half before Slippery Rock rallied to cut the deficit to eight points at 38-30 at halftime.
The Rock continued to push at the opening of the second half, completing the comeback and taking a lead 58-56 with 11:15 to play.
Clarion regained a slim edge and maintained it until just under five minutes to play when Slippery Rock cut it to two points, 75-73.
From there, the Golden Eagles went on a 20-7 run to close the game and push the advantage back out to double figures.
Slippery Rock heads back out on the road to play its first PSAC-West away game Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. tip at California (Pa.). The Rock then visits Lourdes Nov. 30 before returning home to host No. 2 Gannon Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.
